I've got an original rev DVDM board for the DVL-919 (VWS1355-A) that is bad. When the board is installed in the player, at power up the display shows "FLASH SUM". I'm guessing something went wrong with a flash attempt. Does anyone have the software or tools to re-flash the board, or is it a "write off"? Blaine |

Did you try contacting Duane or Kurtis, those are the only two I can think of. Not sure if Duane ever did the updating stuff but could have, not sure about Kurtis. If you do get it working keep us posted on your progress. |

Hi, FLASH SUM means the firmware checksum is wrong. I never quite understood the reason why they built the checksum routine in the firmware but it's there as well as the IC manufacturer ID check which makes it impossible to use fully compatible AMD chips instead of hard to find Fujitsu ones. There are usually 2 reasons why the machine flashes this message: Either someone had tried to alter the contents of the flash memory (firmware code) or there is a problem with the flash chip itself. Since it is totally impossible to operate the machine in this state it is equally impossible to say what is the root cause of the problem without actually inspecting the hardware. Being a 919 the machine was most likely hardware (!) modified years ago to be "code free" (something I'd never do an never did back then, hardware mod that is) so it might be that the hardware mod had malfunctioned in some way thus rendering the flash useless as it usually cannot function on its own if there's an issue with the mod. If you can take the top cover off look at the board on the left (with DVDMAIN printed on it) and check if there are some weird looking multicolored thin wires coming from its bottom side, the one you can't see without flipping the whole board over, to the front panel. If your player is unmodified original region 1or 2 machine there is definitely something with the power distribution. There is a way to read code from and write new firmware to the DVL series flash rom IC WITHOUT taking it off the board and actually without even disassembling anything at all. |

Does anyone have the software and cable? I know it plugs up to the serial interface on the top of the board, but I don't have the necessary software, firmware updates or cables. |

Well to all those concerned I definitely do have knowledge experience and means and often even spares to fix most of not all DVL series related issues. I do not have new pickups though. I check my message box at least twice a week. |

I don't currently have any bad DVDM boards, but I would love to have the ability to flash them. If a board shows "Flash Sum" as described here, is it possible to reflash and get the board operational again? I know there is a DVL-K888 on ebay that might be fixable if we can correct the flash sum error. |

The DVL-919 has the flash chip soldered to the board. That will make it very difficult to fix. The DVL-909 has the chip in a socket, so at least it can be read / write easily with the right tools. Not sure if putting a DVL-909 board in a DVL-919 will work. |
