Post subject:  [DVL-H9] Power converter required?

Hey all, I just got ahold of a DVL-H9 and am curious about whether or nor a stepdown converter is necessary for play in the US. I've taken a look around online and have some conflicting reports, some saying that the player is safely rated for up to 125VAC and so a converter would not be required, as well as some saying that a converter may actually be worse for the unit because of that. Don't really want to plug this thing in until I have a more clear answer. Thanks very much!

I know the R7G has the power supply inside rated for 125 or US and its a Japan only player.
best way to check would be to pop off the top and read the psu to see what it says.

It does say 100V on the back but it also says 50/60hz which would lead me to think that it has a world power supply, or at least 120VAC. This is just a DVL-919, right? Someone here should know but you may need to open the case and look at the PSU itself.

I think so with the CLD-R7G's comb filter.

Yeah this is the safest option.

Safety first....
No guessing when it comes to electronic schematics.

No "Houston we have a problem" scenarios

Please let us know !

I was hoping this wasn't the case, (taking a look at the thing, I'm not really sure how to pop it open) but I think I've got a friend that can give me a hand with it fortunately.

Well, yeah. The idea is still a bit intimidating, especially if you haven't done this sort of thing before. I unscrewed the screws on the back that appeared to be holding the top of the case on, but nothing budged. Like I said, I think I'll get it with a little bit of assistance.

Should be around 5 or 8 screws.
4 on the sides and 1 or even 3 on the back.
If you are at this stage I would just buy the step up or down whatever you need and call it a day.

Talked with a good friend of mine who is not only a stereo enthusiast, but a licensed electrician. Came away from the discussion very confident that the DVL-H9 would work with no voltage intermediary. I tried it hooked up to my existing power setup and it worked perfectly with no issues. I can confirm that the player does indeed work hooked up direct to US mains!

Well one should check inside to make sure they don't fry and destroy our last working players.
Always do these types of things at your own risk.

I think your friend is probably correct. By the time this player was made the only gear being built that couldn’t handle a %10 overage were very high end stuff, lab gear, or super old fashioned things like tube amps. If I had a X-0 I’d buy a real converter transformer for it...mainly out of respect, due to it having bonkers power supply design in the first place. Normal consumer grade entertainment stuff like this though will be fine.

Don’t sue me if it burns your house down...but it will probably be fine. :)

Well of course it does.

The question is are you over supplying it? (Which may very well shorten the life of the power supply section if nothing else.)

Seems the R7G has a PS rated to cope with US voltages and probably so does this, but if you can't be bothered to actually undo some screws to remove the cover and double check the PS why should I be bothered to pull it out of the cabinet and open it to check for you? Living in a 240V country this is a no-brainer in terms of choosing the right step-down transformer.

Did your friend actually look inside or should they perhaps stick to changing (/wiring up) light bulbs?

I would strongly advise not connecting a Japanese LD player to US mains. That is a 20% difference in RMS VAC. Just buy a step down transformer from Amazon. Model Simran SM-1000J can handle 1 KW (supposedly) but 500 W will probably work as well.

There are many players that are known to have world power supplies in them and are perfectly safe to do this with.

I have owned many pieces of Japanese electronics over decades and have never had any issue with over voltage.

I would avoid cheap stepdowns like the plague.

100%. If you've spent, what to you (not the thread creator literally) personally, is a lot of money on something (not just a Laserdisc player) then spend the right money looking after it, shipping it and so on.

Same with anything. Look after it and it should look after you.

I always thought it was funny these fools I would see years ago who would spend 2-400 on a cell phone, yes it was a long time ago.
Only to pickup a belt case for their phone which cost 3 bucks and their phone would fall to the ground since it was a cheapie case.
