Bought a DVL-919 to replace my DVL-909 that I stupidly broke (although I can at least blame part of this on the fact that Pioneer didn't put hardly any adjustment instructions into their 909 service manual), but it arrived with side B playback problems similar to this thread: [DVL-909] B side playing issue

Thanks to Kurtis's posts in that thread, I correctly surmised that the issue was due to the side B centering, and was able to fix the player by making adjustments as shown in the 919's service manual.

I used an oscilloscope, a normal CAV disc, and a Harmony with the service remote codes, but the service remote wasn't really needed.

All I had to do was pause on a random frame with some bright objects (not sure if the bright objects were needed), and make adjustments as in "Spindle Motor Centering Adjustment for Side B" in the 919 service manual by turning the adjustment screw until the signal was as high as I could get it, only took a couple tries.

To reiterate, I don't think I really needed to put the player into test mode and use the service remote, but I probably couldn't make the adjustments correctly without the oscilloscope, as the signal would usually change slightly just by pulling the screwdriver from the adjustment screw, and the onscreen picture didn't seem to change at all while making the adjustments.

Didn't pay too much for the oscilloscope, as it was a used Hitachi CRT scope from the 90's. Takes up a good bit of space though.

So for anyone who wants to try making LD adjustments without going in blind, I'd heartily recommend getting an oscilloscope and learning how to use it, they can certainly be confusing but I was able to get the hang of it by watching YouTube videos and just messing around with all the controls.

Now maybe I can try adjusting the laser on my Turbo Duo, it's been recapped and adjusted by a reputable retro game modder already, but CD audio has started to cut out randomly. Maybe there's some way to hook up the scope to a MISTer and and play Vectrex games or something, too.

The start of Side B started to get messed up again, so I got the oscilloscope out and was able to get everything working by adjusting the Side B centering adjustment screw and Side B tangential adjustment screw a bit. I hope isn't a sign of a more serious problem with Side B.

If you touched tangential, make sure you check centering afterwards.

For Side B centering, make sure tracking servo is off before adjusting. If you don't have a test disc, I would still pause on frame #115.

I lock tangential and centering with nail polish.

Hi, I just picked up a DVL-700 locally with the same issue with it skipping on side B. It's not as bad, I've managed to get it to play a whole side without skipping, but it has gotten stuck into those looping issues were it will just loop 7-10 seconds over and over again. Sometimes it will just skip a few seconds ahead.

I also noticed that during CD playback, if I slightly slap the top of the player while it's playing it skips as well. It doesn't skip or glitch on DVD playback unless I really slap it. Just wondering if this is normal.

I loaded up the service manual and and thankfully it's the same procedure on the DVL-700 as on the DVL-919.

I have a Tektronix 2445 oscilloscope and I've used it before so I know how it works, so I'm hoping this will be an easy fix. It should be more than enough to work with the TRK ERR signal from the player.

I was planning on buying this CAV set: Taxi Driver: Special Edition #109 (1976) [CC1218L]

Would this disc work you think? It's letterboxed so I don't know if that would cause any issues with the signal being displayed on the scope. I don't have any CAV discs, only 2 CLV discs. Please let me know of any good (cheap) test CAV discs.

Since I don't have the test mode remote and no programmable remotes, I'm going to try this without being in service mode. If not, is there anyone on the forum that can sell a service remote or one programmed with the codes?

I don't think it will matter too much what CAV disc you use, as you should be able to measure the signal with the oscilloscope.

Last I checked, there's a GGV test remote in the database for Harmony remotes, not sure how much those go for nowadays though. You might be able to find a used one. Some players can be put into test mode using other methods though, so maybe see if that will work.
