Hi there ^^ I'm completely new to this, but I've had a LD laying around for ages so I thought I'd finally just go for it and buy a player. Found this Sony LDP-1600P for a reasonable price, so I figured, why not. Of course, the previous owner couldn't test it because they didn't really know what it was, either, but I was feeling lucky and thought I could take the risk... So... it powers on fine. When I put in a disc, however, all that happens is that the Play button blinks for a couple of seconds, and then afterwards it just ejects the tray again. On both sides of the one disc I have. Both the CH-1 and CH-2 LEDs turn on too when the disc is inserted. I've connected it both over SCART and the single composite output, made no difference. The disc does not seem to have any laser rot, as far as I can tell, but I honestly am no expert. It wasn't listed on LDDb yet so I added it yesterday, but the info I have is limited, so I included some pictures of it as well. I can take other/better pictures if anyone wants that ^^ I've tried looking for a manual, but they're all behind paywalls (ugh -_-). The only reference I could find was this page that has some info regarding computer control. I think I have the appropriate cable to hook up an Amiga or maybe an old PC up to it and maybe try some of that stuff, but I have no idea if that would help anything at all. All help is appreciated! I'm totally new to this <3 The player: Front cover of Doraemon disc: Back cover of Doraemon disc: Disc side 1: Disc side 2: Closeup of controls:

Having SCART output I'm assuming it's a PAL player. The disc is NTSC, or at least, so it says on the back. The player itself... I have no idea. There's no mention of that anywhere, and as said, I can't find any manuals online either. Would there be any other way to check this right now, or do I just have to go out and buy a PAL LD to check? I thought LD players could handle both signals? or is that only true for some models?

I found it at a thriftshop *years* ago in a box, surrounded by vinyl. Most of the other discs didn't look interesting so I didn't pick 'em up. Wish I had, though. They all seemed to come from the same rental shop because they had the same Laser Visison Centre label on them in the top right corner. Actually, while I'm at it... what's a good place to find LD players? And what should I look for in one anyway? I mainly got this one because I like the way it looks and the RS-232 control (though I have very little idea how useful that is).

Here we go: http://www.oldvcr.tv/collection/index.html?Mode=View&Brand=Sony&Model=LDP-1600&Ref=11- PAL only
- Analog discs only (it won't play a Digital Audio disc)
Really, really old stuff and able to play only a sub-group or PAL discs that were themselves a sub-catalog of the NTSC LD world. Probably not a good player to start with LD. I validated your LD, it's Doraemon [RDL1005] (from Japan) but this is a Hong Kong release, probably in Cantonese. It couldn't be a bilingual release (using each analog track for a different language) because the CX encoding would ruin it. Probably no English at all on it! Julien

Yeah, I figured as much ._. it was a lot cheaper than most players out there, and I don't have that much money, so yeah... Oh well, guess I'll have to hunt for another player >.>; Quote: I validated your LD, it's Doraemon [RDL1005] (from Japan) but this is a Hong Kong release, probably in Cantonese. Cool, thanks for validating, I'll make sure to take a proper picture of the sleeve sometime soon (and maybe fill in some more details if I can)! And yeah, didn't expect it to be in English at all ^^ I really just picked it out years ago because that was the only LaserDisc in that box which I actually recognized ^^ nissling wrote: knoeki wrote: Is that a PVM-20M4 I'm seeing? PVM-1954Q to be precise, actually! ^^

Well, I managed to get a hold of a couple of PAL discs. The good news is: the player actually works and will play those discs. The bad news: - the tray motor seems to be slightly faulty. It gets stuck when ejecting. A lot. - terrible ghosting on the output - won't play digital audio (as expected) - picture quality is pretty f***ing bad - pausing doesn't actually make it go to a still frame, the screen just goes black I also suspect one of the discs (Bad Boys) is suffering from laser rot, but I'm not sure; it looks more like badly degraded VHS than the typical snow I've seen on videos people put on youtube. It's really difficult to take a picture of it since I can't pause the movie without it going to black. Here's the best I can manage. Notice the purple horizontal lines. It's WAY worse. Massive coloured horizontal bars flickering all over the screen every now and then. Really looks like a bad VHS copy. And an example of the "ghosting":
