My machine is working, however at times it makes a whirring sound whilst playing a laser disc. It also makes a clunking sound when ejecting the disc drawer, and also a slight clunk when closing the drawer :(

I think that what you hear is normal. I have an MDP-600 and it makes clunking sounds when opening and closing the drawer. It has worked like that since I got it many years ago. There is also a clunking sound when the player is powered up and down.

Personally, I think it is just the normal sounds of the pickup moving around inside.

Remember there is a lot of plastic parts too. Plastic can shrink over the years, or deform a little. Thus, you get a little bit more sounds. In my X9, I can sometimes get a snapping sound when the drawer is ejected. Probably just some plastic part that does it because of the age. I've looked at it, nothing is broken.

Many thanks for all the replies. This is not our first LD player, my husband has had Pioneer, Sony & Panasonic in the past; however this is the first player we've had that makes this noise.
In Australia these machines are few & far between; so it's rather precious to us!! :D
