Hello,

I have been enjoying my lightly used MDP-650 for a couple of weeks now. Playing back a few discs every night.

I pulled out the first box of my Neon Genesis Evangelion set last night.

I took out the first disc and straight away noticed it is thicker/heavier than most LDs I have.

Anyway I put it in and on pressing play there is a slight "squelching" sound, it doesn't spin up and I have an error message flashing on the unit display and on-screen: "OFF". At this point all controls are disabled and I'm forced to unplug the power and start again.

On powering back up everything is back to normal and she still plays other "lighter" LDs, but the same error keeps occurring with the Evangelion LDs.

I'm guessing the clamp isn't "grippy" enough for heavier LDs and needs cleaning/adjustment/replacement?

My next course of action is to open her up, clean the clamp pad and try again?

Would anyone advise against this or have any other suggestions as to what might be going wrong here?

Once you open her up, it'll end in the same state all your Pioneer players did before.

Better leave it closed.

Opened her up and used cotton buds and isopropyl alcohol on the clamp pad.

No change. Just refuses to spin those Eva LDs.. still works perfectly with everything else I throw at it strangely, even other "heavy" discs.

Oh well time to enjoy TM Network Gift for FANKS from '88. Nice CAV video of the guys in Hong Kong in the '80s in the video for Get Wild.
