well, managed to grab "Take Five II" out of it by taking it apart.
otherwise, a waste of $5 hah.
I dont think i feel like trying to locate the failing cap on this. anyone need parts out of this lesser model?
looks like all laserdiscs are gone off of local craigslist now. even the players. the market gone? gotta hoard any player i can find now.

bad news... sticker says KHS-150A
and wow thats a difficult label to find, its under the data cable, so to read it you have to stick a mirror under the data cable and a flashlight .... not easy.

it looks like the board has already had repairs done to it. theres a lot of flux and a few diodes that were spliced in here and there.
i have no idea if thats the problem, or problem with caps. i'm not really a circuit guy.
i didnt see any bulging caps though. but its difficult to see the psu under the main board as well.
the transformer on the psu looks kinda like its leaking something. do transformers fail ?

i went to pick this off my table and move it, only to hear something rattling around. great. took it apart again... hoping to find mystery, only to find plastic case broken clip. darn, not a capacitor or other part that would explain the power problem. just a waste of 5 minutes.
anyone in detroit metro want this for parts or repair free? maybe grasshopper ?

laserpaal wrote: I don't know if this is a common fault for this model, as I have read several topics related to the problem. I think it might be. I just received one of these units. Player works, but the front display does not light up. I can smell bad electrolytics coming from the unit. Nothing visibly wrong though, so I'm probably going to see if a full recap of the power supply board fixes it.

There's a guy on YouTube that has partially recapped this model and fixed the on and off power problem. Seems like the problem can be bad capacitors on the larger circuit board and maybe on the power supply board. Is there a possibility that many Sony laserdisc players were tossed because of bad capacitors that could have been fixed? I know that the MDP-600 and MDP-800/850 can develop a darker image over time, maybe this also can be related to bad capacitors. The capacitor plague during the last decades of the 20th century comes to my mind, so this is just my thoughts.. Link for the video
