I guess my biggest question is noise. I have an AC-3 modded CLD-D703 and while it is nice and sharp, it can be pretty noisy (though not as noisy as say the CLD-60X players, for example). How do Panasonic's players compare in terms of noise (both luma and chroma)?

The picture is very noise free, at least I think so, and I cannot stand luma or chroma noise. It drives me crazy. Even on bad pressings I'm constantly amazed at the purity of color and lack of chroma or luma noise. And if a disc does have some minor noise, the Mode 1 setting of the 900's digital field Noise Reduction totally takes care of it without reducing resolution or introducing motion artifacts of any kind (I've checked that out with Video Essentials resolution and moving zone plate patterns). The mode 2 noise reduction setting is for the really bad discs but impairs vertical resolution slightly - the smallest details will get a slightly stair-stepped look vertically. Mode 1 has no impairments on the image at all - it just makes the disc look like a good pressing.

So, basically, it has a clean, noise free picture with incredible color purity and saturation. It's colors are more saturated and detailed than Pioneer players. That's been my experience anyway. If you havent seen it, read The Perfect Vision review of the Runco LJR I that I posted - it's basically a review of the 900 since there were no modifications to the player other than that one output board. And there are no internal adjustments for noise reduction changes or anything, so their comments about its noise free color, etc... Apply to the 900 too.
Here's the link to the review comparing it with the CLD-97.

I have to say, I agree 100%. This unit has the sharpest image I've seen on any LD player so far. No color/white smear. It handles Discovision fine, although there's a longer startup period for some DV CAV titles. No static-y audio problems either. If you can find an LX-900U, get it!

I've been offered a 900 for a very nice price, though it's apparently stood unused for some years. If it's all that good, I may invest some money (sometime when I have it!) in getting the AC-3 mod, so I can swap it out for the D704 in my main system.

Do get it. I am enjoying mine quite nicely. Rather I am enjoying my Runco LJR-I and the LX-900 is being saved for parts XD

It works! And I have it at home now. I have to say, the "Retro" video mode doesn't seem very useful… but then, some of Pioneer's players had some weird modes, too. Wish it had more than the one digital audio output.

I use "Retro" when I'm watching black and white movies. That completely eliminates the odd cross-color artifacts when watching a B&W movie.

Yep, I think it disables the color burst entirely.

yes, it is nice to have that, but my TV and projector both have settings that I can save to have no color for B&W films
so its not really a major thing to need on a player.

Agreed. It's a nice-to-have, but certainly not a must-have.

It's not necessary, but if you have the player, it's a good reason to use that function.

The laser on mine is going. There's a replacement laser on the 'Bay for $70- Is this a drop-in replacement or am I correct in assuming the laser needs alignment once in its new home?

It won't be a drop-in replacement because there are adjustment on the pickup for tangential angle. Once the pickup is replaced the tracking and focus servo may need to be readjusted. But, it may also work fine as-is. You won't really know until you try it out.

If somebody is looking for a LX-600 this looks like a good deal. YMMV

Do you have to have the remote to access the menu and settings? I have an LX-600, just got my first disc in and fired it up. Playing Wizard of Oz - Criterion. But I cant seem to access the menu from the front face buttons.

Im in need of an LX-600 remote.

Most LD players don't have menus at all, the Panasonic players included.

The only thing you'd need off the remote is to change audio tracks, everything else is available on the front panel. For reference, the model number for it is VEQ1509. They're not too hard to find on eBay and the like.

Hello all,
I just "won" a LX-900 for $49.99. If it works out like I think/hope it will I'll have a Pioneer CLD-D703 for sale and I'd like to offer it to you fine folks here at LDDB before I try other electronic oceans. The player comes with a Mitsubishi (Pioneer clone) that operates all functions. PM if interested.

Good lord, that's quite a find. You've got me curious. If it was on eBay, is there a link?
