I have an LX1000U which I picked up about a year ago from a service shop that was selling it on eBay as a fully reconditioned unit. It's a great player for the most part. Unfortunately, since that time it has developed a problem where audio playback starts to become distorted around the 35-45 minute mark on discs. The first half hour or so is always flawless. Video playback stays clean and free of defects through an entire side despite the audio problem.

The static isn't random; the amplitude of the audio signal corresponds directly with the static such that quiet moments and whispered dialog yield no static at all and someone yelling is liable to sound like they're talking over a walkie talkie with a bad signal.

A search yielded a thread with someone talking about an LX600 of theirs that had a similar problem. They seemed to indicate that theirs did it only for digital audio but that it did so through an entire side, unlike mine. They did not reveal what, if anything, resolved the issue:

The sample they provided sounds precisely like the audio distortion I get:

Does anyone have any insight into what might be wrong and how to fix it?

Sounds like an audio capacitor issue.
IF this is the issue you need to find the audio board and replace the caps.

They are almost 25 years old now

I can certainly recap it if needed, but I would expect that particular problem to impact audio disc-wide. You can jump from the beginning to the end of a disc and go from clear to distorted and jump back to the beginning and have it go clear again. Doesn't seem to be a heat or runtime issue.

More testing has revealed that I was incorrect about the video remaining defect free when the audio gets bad.

Both audio and video get progressively worse after around 30 minutes on my TNG discs. By the outer edge of the disc, digital audio is cutting in and out and the video has what looks like crosstalk in it. The analog audio doesn't have much distortion in it compared to the digital audio.

I'm assuming it's an alignment issue. Sound plausible? Anyone know how to adjust a Panasonic? I'm an electronics guy, so I have a full lab of diagnostic equipment including a 100 MHz DSO but no experience doing this sort of tuning since I mostly work on digital logic.

There isn't as much Panasonic experience here overall, but bguzman (spelling) got a really sweet 1000U with service manuals and posted some a while back.

Here's the service manual to the 200U, which IIRC is the 'dumbed down' version of the 1000U (the most extreme case of that would be a 2080 vs 97 on the Pioneer side ;) ) and should be useful for mechanical stuff.
