Post subject:  Panasonic LaserActive Repair

Hi All,

I've had in my collection a Panasonic LaserActive System for several years now. It's fully functional for the genesis add on but not for the actual laserdisc reader / CD reader itself (tries to read the disk and fails, even after replacing the laser). I've taken it to a local video game repair shop and the closest they've gotten to figuring out what's wrong is finding out it's specifically the DWV1132-A / DNX1843-D part. Problem is, I don't think those parts were used in Panasonic players that are easier to come by. What are my odds of actually getting this repaired? Think I should just hold onto it as a fun piece of history?

For frame of reference, if there's a repair place that might be able to take a look at it, I'm in northern Virginia.

In general this is a very easy player to repair as far as LD players go. There are also lots of parts used on other low end Pioneers that are cross compatible. I’m sure it can be saved, even if it means buying another wrecked LA.

Virtually nothing from any Panasonic is going to fit a Pioneer though, which is fine because Pioneer made the vast vast majority of all LD players including yours.

It needs to be sent to a real LD repair guy. Video game guys are cool and all but there isn’t much call for hardcore diagnosis in that world.

Don't you mean a Pioneer? I never knew they made a Panni laseractive.
Did a quick search and didn't see anything.

If it is a Pio then you need to look possibly at the caps, but in all honesty I would just hold onto it as parts are non existent OR
sell it as a paperweight and let someone else fix it.

Kurtis is pretty much the only one still on here that may or could fix, grasshopper is around but not here on the forum anymore.

Good luck.

Thanks! Actually what brought me to the forums was a recommendation by someone at a local video game event to find Kurtis. Any chance I could get his username?

(You're totally right on the brand name, I misspoke)

Nope.... only Pioneer was busy with LaserActive. Panasonic was busy trying to promote 3DO in the same time period and didn’t achieve any positive results in the marketplace much like LaserActive.

as a Gamer born and bred upon the SEGA GENESIS, i once wanted a CLD-A100 with the GENESIS module VERY BADLY.

not so much so today, as they seem to be quit a bit more trouble than they seem to be worth, at least to me...

You’re correct. Even though 16-bit games and LDs are some of my favorite things of all time the LaserActive just sucks. It has NONE of the LD titles you played in the arcade, just super low budget new ones.

I wouldn’t say they are any more unreliable than any other LD player, just that it isn’t as much worth the work.

So did I get the last work Grasshopper did before he moved to Canada, or did that actually happen?
