Recent pickup from EBay.

Winning bid £99

Seller said laser dead.

Laser not dead. Just coated in nicotine!!!

So stripping down this week and giving it a deep deep clean.

2 of the four bulbs in the front panel confirmed dead. Keen to replace all four. Does anyone have any insight into the spec of these bulbs?

Clamp torque is strong and fully engages. Laser tries to focus but till I can safely access the lens to clean, it’s not sensing a disc. Spindle motor condition unknown at this point because I’m assuming that will only engage when a disc is correctly detected.

Viewing the laser through the iPhone camera confirms a solid emission from the diode, but also confirms lens is caked in gunk.

Quietly confident

Help on Bulbs much appreciated. Also if there are any known issues with caps in power supply / main board that are historically troublesome.

Cleaning lens made no difference other than removing a film layer of muck.

So, when loading a disc, the laser moves. Tries to focus, and then returns to its default position.

There is no error on the display such as “no disc”.

This is the case with a CD or laserdisc.

I’ve read shorting the TP near IC601 will put the unit into test mode and force the spindle to spin, so will do that to determine if the spindle is at fault.

Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Reach out to McIntosh support. They will sell you the OEM light bulbs. You will need to find a donor CLD-95/97 if you need to replace any internal parts.

Thanks.

Bulbs sorted.

Will put it service mode and see what’s what. Really want to do a full disassembly because it’s really sticky inside. It’s horrible.

It’s a real shame to see such a beautiful machine (cosmetics outside are mint) so disgusting inside.

New bulbs installed. Starting to clean as much as I can as I go along.
Here is the post load laser clearly “working”.

Common issue with 97 series players. Need to scope thru the electronics to determine why the unit is not detecting the disc and starting to spin. You should find it will spin up in service mode but it will not lock on a clean picture.
