CLV and CAV Disc Handling: The original VH8000 had famously struggled with Constant Linear Velocity (CLV / "Extended Play") discs due to spindle speed tracking and servo lock issues. The VH8005 revised the servo and spindle control boards to provide more stable playback of CLV discs, though full trick-play functionality (freeze-frame, slow motion, frame stepping) remained exclusive to Standard Play (CAV) discs.
Mechanical & Electronic Re-engineering The VH8000 series was plagued by extreme sensitivity to mechanical shocks and thermal drift. The VH8005 attempted to refine these vulnerabilities: Optical Tracking Alignment: The radial tracking mirror and focus servos were slightly updated to prevent the objective lens assembly from physically colliding with warped or out-of-spec DiscoVision/LaserDisc pressings (a common failure mode in early VH8000 models where the objective lens could scrape against the rotating disc). Transit Lock Mechanism: Due to how easily the optical sled and HeNe laser tube alignment were knocked out of place during shipping, the VH8005 incorporated transit locking screws under the chassis that had to be physically disengaged by the user prior to power-on.

The European Counterpart: When Philips introduced LaserDisc to the European market under the "VLP" moniker, the Philips VLP-700 was directly derived from the Magnavision VH8005 architecture (whereas the VLP-600 was derived from the remote-less VH8000). Competition and Market Obsolescence: Despite the improvements in the VH8005, it arrived just as Pioneer introduced the VP-1000 (and later the LD-1100). Pioneer’s solid-state servo control, superior HeNe optical assembly alignment, and vastly better tracking capability quickly eclipsed the Magnavision design in reliability and picture quality.
Collector & Service Status Today: The VH8005 is prized among vintage electronics conservators as an iconic artifact of late 1970s / early 1980s optical storage history. Modern restoration of the VH8005 is notoriously difficult. HeNe laser tubes weaken or lose gas containment over decades, the complex power supply boards suffer from severe electrolytic capacitor degradation, and the analog servo circuits require precise optical alignment procedures using specialized test discs and multi-trace oscilloscopes. At least it sounds like you have the "improved" version. Have you opened it up and done a cursory internal inspection and attempted any cleaning or lubrication? There are likely no belts as this is a top-loader, although there could be a belt for a tilt adjustment motor (if equipped). Do you at least have the service manual? It's probably available here. Even if you have no idea what you're looking at, you may glean something. I have a Pioneer PR-7820 that I know has a melted rubber clamp, but it worked when parked back in 2015. I'm afraid to touch it, myself, so I know how you feel.

With that said, it doesn't appear to be a bad laser since you see a red light (that's actually very good) and the spindle motor still spins up (another good thing).
I probably would look to see if the laser assembly is really stuck (try gently moving it with your hand with the player powered down) and if it appears to move freely I would think that's not the issue (not sure if it's belt driven or worm gearing so that is something you need to investigate).
The most common problems other than what I mentioned is mirror calibration issues and bad capacitors. I haven't opemed it up yet, but powered down the laser assembly seems frozen next to the spindle. Based on your comments this does sound promising. This player has always worked flawlessly. It fell to less frequent use when it was supplanted by the CLDD1030 (then that by the 3030) You know how that goes. I'll pop it open and proceed carefully THank you!

Hi, wlgiv (or w1giv?)- Welcome to the LDDB Forum! Your VH8005 (actually a VB8005) at the least needs a new belt. The PRB replacement (if you can find those, if they are still made) is a PRB FR3.7. It is a flat belt, about 3.7 inch x 0.1 inch (full length, if cut and laid flat). Amazon sells a kit of flat belts for less than US$10 if I remember right, with 5-10 each of several sizes. The 50-51mm (length when "folded flat") one should work. Now for the scary part (even for us experienced technicians): If you replaced your 8005 with a CLD-1030 and CLD-3030 (I had, and loved, that machine!), have you possibly not used the Magnavox player since the early 1990s? Unless you are super-lucky (as in "lottery-winner-lucky"  ), it is quite likely that the servo-mirror assemblies on your player need repair. The glue holding two small magnets on the back of each of the two mirrors fails. This failure happens/has happened on nearly 100% of the original Magnavox players (both models) as well as the Philips-branded PAL versions sold just afterward in Europe. I have done this mirror repair on one of my players so far, but once it is done, the optical system needs to be re-aligned, and that is a serious challenge. I put my player project on hold in late May and I have not yet got back to it; I was mostly (I hope!) through the alignment process when I had to let it wait. I did get "some" video and audio from my player with some basic/trial-and-error alignment work. Your laser assembly ("sled") is not moving because the gears are holding it in place, so that is likely not an issue. (You removed the "shipping screw" from the disc compartment now, if you had reinstalled it in the past, I assume.) If you want, I can possibly post a couple of pictures of some of what I described.
