That's amazing, if you use an inflation calculator then by todays price this would be approximately $4678.63

Thanks for starting this thread.

Yeah now such a device today would sell maybe 1 unit per month at the best buy lol. People complain about Nvidia Shield at $200 compared to $80 Roku.

The Pioneer prices look more like list price than MSRP. They are way high. I bought an S201 for $370 or something like that and people I knew bought S250s (nearly the same) for even less.

The S104 had the same $299.99 price list or MSRP. That was the cheapest player ever and it had the price that ended in 9s to prove it. :)

The LD-W1 price seems closer to list...

By MSRP I mean List Price/Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. They are way high indeed, with a significant amount of these players having a retail price that was hundreds less than the MSRP. I have some of those numbers from retail advertisements:
  • CLD-870 $290 (-$210)
  • CLD-1080 $350 (-$250?)
  • CLD-M301 $360 (-$340?)
  • CLD-M401 $430 (-$340?)
  • CLD-D502 $440 (-$210?)
  • CLD-2080 $500 ($-150?)
  • CLD-V740 $500 (-$400)
  • CLD-V820 $590 (-$410)
  • CLD-D702 $720, $690 (-$510?)
  • CLD-3070 $900 (-$300)
  • CLD-3080 $800 (-$400?)
I had to estimate on some models because I haven't found the MSRP yet.

The LD-W1 price was much lower than I thought, but this is from a 1989 issue of Consumers Digest. "List": $1,700 "Best": $1,440. Another article from 1988 confirms the $1,700. This really was the buy!

List is the high price, what installers change. Installers and Amway.

Retail/street/MSRP is the low price, what stores charge.

In the old days it was illegal to fix prices so stores would knock hundreds off to compete and still make actual money. Because of this every player likely had many prices before the last one is sold. Nowadays Apple/Sony/Nintendo set a price with zero profit in it and if you charge more or less they sue the seller and somehow that’s legal...

Over here in PAL land when I purchased my first ever brand new LD player a Pioneer CLD-2950 in 1995 it set me back £699/€783. This was exactly at the time it was being phased out in favour of its successor the CLD-D925 which from memory was another £100/€112 on top.

at $1300 list, i imagine the 1988 CLD-3030 must have been like $1000 tops on the street in the U.S.
and the U.S. Military Post Exchange market could clearly offer them up for far less still;

It’s not just LD, it was everything electronics. Pioneer never make a $79 sound bar to hook to a $1000 player. Many TVs were thousands of dollars back then. $1500 VCRs weren’t uncommon but you still needed $400 for a halfway decent one up until 1990 or so. The Japanese market was intense with $300 Walkmans and $1500 ghetto blasters.

It was made of real metal. Not by slaves and robots in China. It was built to last forever (hence this forum in 2020 still going) and not to be replaced by an annual update. The stuff that’s still being made this way is still expensive but rarely is it done. Today’s product designer mainly works to eliminate the entire product from existence or as close to it as possible so they can charge for software.

When my oldest players were made gas was $0.80 a gallon and a new Chevy S-10 pickup truck could be bought for $6000. You could get two 16.9 Oz glass bottles of Coke for $1. The average American home was $100,000 (now more like $400,000). An average phone bill was $12 and you rented the phone. Today people actually spend $1000 on a phone and $150 a month for the bill. That would be a lot of LD players...

Also back then, music cost money. Sometimes just to hear a song...period, because there was no other way, you spent $15 on an import single. Even domestic 7”s were $3 each, $1.50 a song. People do still pay for music but it’s no longer a mainstream thing.

Yes the CLD-D925 had an SSSP or "list price" of £799 when first released here in the UK, there were very few retailers discounting it by much for the first year or so.

Thanks indeed. I've knocked £1 off the price I had in the name of accuracy. :thumbup:

I got my DVL-909 from Crutchfield for $1000 back in 1998. Was quite a bit for me at the time, but I really wanted both an LD player and a DVD player, and as luck would have it, it was easy enough to mod the DVD part of the 909 to play Region 2 DVDs as well, so I ended up playing a lot of Japanese DVDs on it as well as LDs.

Only other player I bought new was the CLD-R5 in 2007 (the last model Pioneer still made then) for 36,286 yen from Amazon JP. Soon bought a used HLD-X9 for 100,000 yen to replace it.

All MSRPs added to the hardware database, thank you!

Only few issues:

M-V7057 $1,99 => I believe $1,299
CLD-870 $500 => should be CLD-V870?
CLK-V90 $1,900 => should be CLK-V900?

And this one is listed twice:

CLD-3030 $900
CLD-3030 $1,300

M-V7057 was your edit, but CLD-870 should be LD-870.
CLK-V90 was written verbatim in Popular Mechanics, July 1992 Page 45 but it might have been a typo of CLK-V900.

CLD-3030 I can't find my source for, but $1,300 was probably MSRP with an advertised price being $900.

Updated the prices, power/dimensions on a bunch of players found in a stack of Pioneer brochures/material I acquired a while ago:

Not sure if useful but found that Wikipedia has a long list of Japanese player prices from various manufacturers:
