Julien, that’s how I had mine setup. Dedicated stereo output is significantly better. This chip is also routed to the headphone output so the headphone output is stellar too.

Did a quick A/B comparison on Hi-Res audio and they sounded different indeed.

Stereo output has more.... Juice? Power? Clarity?

I could tell which output was used (listening to The Jacksons' Triumph album 24bit/96KHz over the OPPO USB DAC) in blind test with a friend.

So, yes, clearly there is a difference!

As explained on my long post, ess chipset is an fpga (and i2s receiver) with added 8 dac and built in current/voltage converter. Those 8 dacs are configured to be two banks of 4 in parallel on the stereo output and 8 banks of 1 on the 7.1 output. Every time you double the dacs in parallel you gain 3db s/n ratio. 4 dacs per ch is 6db improvement and should be audible as you verified.

A most interesting dac would be 1 ess dac chip per channel. That way all 8 dacs in parallel for a total of 16. Or even better 2 ess dacs per channel. I guess the sweet spot is 4 dacs per channel as no one so far used multi ess dacs per channel.

With the trove of Service Manuals uploaded recently, I started adding a few:

CLD-D390 - LC78620E
CLD-D406 - LC78620E
CLD-D501 - 1 x SAA7350
CLD-D502 - CXD2500AQ - 1 x PD2026B
CLD-D503 - LC78681E - 1 x PD2026B
CLD-D590 - LC78620E
CLD-D790 - LC78620E

Feel free to help if you know how find the DAC (or integrated EMF demodulator) in datasheets!

There were two DACs on the thread not updated in the first post, Pioneer LD-V4300D and CLD-2950, plus few further info about CLD-D925 - all very precious info for PAL players.

Following is the updated Pioneer DACs list, in alphabetical order - Julien, may you please update first post accordingly? Thanks in advance!

(note: http://www.datasheetlib.com is gone, so links to it are useless now; would be good to replace them with archive.org links or others, but I'm too lazy to do that... )

Updated!

I removed the other part because the point of this thread is to least the DACs, not other parts.
You can start a thread on optical pick-up if you want :-)

All links were removed (many obsolete) and I will just archive the PDFs on the web server and provide them via links.

Example for DENON LA-3500, it will show up as: Internal DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) = PCM61P (Burr-Brown)

... and to avoid broken links, all the relevant DAC Datasheets we can find will be archived in:

https://manuals.lddb.com/DACs/

Updated the code to make links automated:

Internal DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) = PCM61P (Burr-Brown)

I will stop updating the topic first post now that all the information has been moved to the Hardware Database (it only took 5 years!).

The new URL will be => https://www.lddb.com/hardware/part/dac/

Any update/submit with the DAC information will automatically update the list from now on!

I finished revisiting the newly added SONY and PHILIPS Service Manuals to fetch new DACs (and fixed a few mistakes in the list as well).

Found new DACs that were not listed before -- and also got a LOT better at finding the DACs in the SMs with practice!
