Hello!

I have a few PS2 and PS3 pending in the waiting room for addition as new devices in the database.

But I have put them on-hold because when quickly digging the PS wikis and websites, it seems that there were several H/W variations over the years.

Should we only add a generic device for each generations or should go more into details?

Disclaimer: I only had a PS1, PSOne and, briefly, a PS2. I'm really not knowledgeable on these.

I wouldn’t add a PlayStation 1 at all. They had no official capability for playing any video. They had unofficial VCD support but LDDB already disregards CDV. I’m not into it, personally.

The PS2 is a pretty solid progressive scan DVD player that is limited to YPbPr. It does DTS.

The PS3 is a pretty solid Blu-ray player. No 4K or 3D in my machine but I think some sort of PS3/4 can.

So if we’re cataloging every DVD and Blu-ray player made then yes. They are just normal players.

I think it would look pretty funny to see a video of someone forcing there laserdisc into the PS1 and slamming the cover.

PS3 Slim can do 3D. I never owned a PS4 but I assume it can do 3D too.

The initial release Fat PS3 with 60GB HDD has full PS1 and PS2 game comparability. It has the PS2’s emotion engine hardware built in. Later released “Fat” versions dropped the emotion engine but had software support for 80% of the PS2 games. I believe PS3 slim and later versions completely dropped PS2 game support. PS3 Fat and Slim could play SACD discs. I don’t own a Super Slim so I don’t know if it can do SACD.

Note: PS3 was the first Blu-ray player with built in memory for BD-Live. All other Blu-ray disc players required an add on 8GB or larger SD card or USB flash drive for BD-Live. Initial Blu-ray players were expensive but none of them came with the add on memory. PS3 could partition a portion of its internal HDD for BD-Live out of the box without any additional hardware. Oppo BDP-83 might be the first dedicated Blu-ray disc player with built in BD-Live memory but don’t quote me on this.

Note: PS3 was the first Blu-ray disc player that could stream Netflix. You needed a special Netflix disc to initiate the Netflix streaming for a while until the full Netflix app was developed. This special Netflix disc used the BD-Live technology as a work around.
