2025 UP With the emergence of HDMI PSP cable, the UMD movies return to interest. The films are being broadcast in 720x480 (in H264 and stereo sound AAC), a kind of Baby Blu-ray. There are very nices editions with beautiful cover, often double sided, like this Iron Man edition (Spanish import). Personal photos.

After writing that post I had an urge to watch a UMD so I watched The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005). I feel like I’m the only person who liked this movie and even I only own it on UMD and only because it was really cheap or maybe free.
With this particular title macroblocking is minimal, about as good as a really good DVD. You can still see clear steps in what are meant to be subtle gradients, etc, but the night sky and space are almost trouble free…from what can be seen on this display…which is a 20 year old portable LCD with not a lot of range in brightness or color gamut.
They really did a good job of tuning the format to the screen. How would this look externally via HDMI on a 4K HDR display? I’m going to assume terrible. This is after all letterboxed. This helps with the pathetic data rate (%100 black is very space efficient in digital video) but sure doesn’t help make small text readable or keep crisp edges on things.
Regardless the video was better than I remember it, at least on the factory screen. The sound on the other hand is actually worse than I remember it. It sounds like MDLP2…which I think it pretty much is. With good headphones you can easily hear that “downloaded from Napster” crinkly phasing effect. It’s pretty shite, really, but it was designed for PSPs, and PSPs have headphone outputs even weaker then MD players, and the films were meant to be watched in the air or on the Tokyo Metro wearing those ratchet little earbuds so honestly even MDLP4 would have done the job.
I’m going to be on a PSP kick for a while now, I have a feeling, so tonight I’ll try to see how bad the sound is on a dual language title. I’ll also see if I can extract UMD video and watch it on my Mac which would give me the clearest possible picture of the muddy video on the disc.
I also need to re-learn how to copy my games onto the Memory Stick. Load times on most PSP games are HORRIBLE, I’m now remembering, with the problem pretty much not being a thing if run off the MS. I don’t know if this will mount on a new Mac. I may have get some PPC thing hooked up…

Extremely late to the game here, but as someone who owned umds then and now they're ok, but that's it, just ok. The video quality is just fine, and Ive heard if you bothered connecting your PSP to a TV via component it's pretty much DVD quality. But the appeal never lasts, and that's why Sony only tried this format once
