I thought it would be neat to see what everyone's favorite movie released on the UMD format was.
Mine is Dead Leaves, an obscure animated movie with absurdist expressionism and very unique coloring and styling techniques.

Never heard of Dead Leaves before.
Just watched the trailer, looks interesting but influenced by a bunch of stuff, I see a lot of ren and stimpy, lots of retro Japanese anime
like Patalliro and other such anime.

Maybe worth a pickup or just skip since its later anime and I try to keep to focusing on earlier anime, we will see if I bother.

It is fairly obscure. I don't think it ever gained any amount of popularity. In person, I have only met one other who knew about it.
It's influenced for sure. I wouldn't say it's a cinematic masterpiece or anything, more-so an intriguing art project.
If you can find it with the case and in decent condition I would say it is worth 10-15 USD.
The director, Hiroyuki Imaishi, was also the director of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan. He was previously employed by the legendary studio Gainax.
It only has 52 minutes of runtime. Not super long. I don't think it was ever intended to be a fully funded "maximum effort" type of project.
It's a fun and interesting release.

I watched Dead Leaves back in 2005, and indeed it is one of the odder things I came across.
I had no idea there was an UMD version of it, I watched it on DVD. I'm quite certain it was
licensed and officially subtitled back in the day.

Incredible amount of influence in this, some from USA and Japan.
Sorry again to hijack the topic, but cool film, not amazing but very odd.
Had some liquid television feel, those early pieces, even some early 30s betty boop style, and even the early 80s of I believe the comic
artist Knight, can't remember his first name? Did some of the early Spider Ham and there were some other artists of that era
in comics who did that thick line stuff, can't remember the other names now.

Dead Leaves is probably as odd as it is cool. I'm happy to share its existence with you.




I never knew about the DVD release. I guess that does make sense though. It was probably much better quality all around.
