Hi folks!

For a long time, I have been using A.K.A.'s like this for title:

MAIN TITLE (Alternative Title 1/Alternative Title 2)

But we can do better than that. My problem was that PHP and MySQL were not initially very good at handling unicode and foreign language characters (Japanese, Russian, etc.). Things have changed since I took a look at it in 2006 and maybe it could be a good idea to revisit the titles now?

Here is a dev example for your perusal. Search works normally, even with non-roman characters.

Cool. That would allow definite improvements on anime discs, which are sometimes very confusing in regard to title.

I think you'll all like it!

Still need to fix the UTF-8 full-text search. It's working on my dev PC but not on the website...

wouldn't "cover" be more original than "original" (the transliterated one)?

I'm trying to keep things flexible. Originally I was thinking that 2 titles could be enough, but trying a few exotic titles showed that at least 3 were needed.

"Cover" is more dedicated to non-Roman alphabets (Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Greek, etc.) that show on the cover in the local language (obi, etc.) while the main title is also available. If the local title is not a direct translation, then a romanized version (3rd title) could give additional information.

We also have the case of movies with completely different titles from one country to another. In that case the main title should be the "International" one, the "cover" title whatever was used for the local release (if different) and the "original" title the true movie title (if different from the 2 above).

I will review updates as they come. The idea is to improve the search hits while providing search engines with more relevant information to find the correct URLs. Maybe "original" could be renamed to something else.
