As well as the current Visual ratio lddb.com provides [ http://www.lddb.com/help_ratio.php#wide ], I would like to request an icon for Super 35 films and Open Matte.

There a many films on VHS/Laserdisc that had the prints transferred as straight open matte, rather than letterboxed or cropped. For film collectors, knowing which films are open matte and uncropped is invaluable. Most films shot open matte have been transferred to DVD and BluRay with the top and bottom of the frame cropped.

The red line being the area shown on a open matte Laserdisc transfer.
The Yellow line is cropped for widescreen viewing.

One such entry would be The Evil Dead.

It is currently listed as TV Size, however this is technically incorrect as it was filmed open matte to be cropped in movie theaters.

I also request a separate Super 35 icon to the open matte one is that technically, a Super 35 film cropped for 4:3 is still cropped. However, it is not Pan & Scan. An example would be The Abyss: Extended Version (1989):

In aspect ratio you have open matte but no selection for super 35. I made a thread called significant laserdiscs. I have a list of super35 transfers there. Currently only a handful, mostly Jim Cameron films. If you know any titles transferred in super35/open matte, I will add it to the list.

Thoughts:

As long as everything is there, I don't see what the point of collecting open matte is. That's not how it was shown theatrically, it's not what the filmmakers were shooting for, etc. I'm just going to matte it myself with the Zoom button anyway. I have no need for visible boom mikes or Chippewa wearing Chuck Tailors, and scope isn't 'Scope unless it's wide. The 4:3 SE of the Abyss is really impressive, but I'm having a really hard time thinking of anything else like it.

Also, I question the LD fan community's ability to accurately enter data of the sort you are looking for. Aspect ratio is something that confuses everyone, at least occasionally.

While I personally buy LDs or DVDs that are open matte as they are sort of related to squeezed discs as you do get more information I think this is a hard thing to do as most don't even know or understand
how this really works.

As you even listed the example of Evil Dead, It is clearly an open matte but its been listed as TV size.

I highly doubt that any theater at the time would bother to "matte" a film like Evil Dead
to any other aspect ratio other than 1.33 they would just throw the image fast in order to make quick cash on the film.

You do have Open Matte listed, but a clear graphic to tell between academy ratio and open matte would be helpful.

I think Open Matte transfers of movies on LD and VHS is another reason to collect films in those formats. Even though you weren't meant to see that part of the frame - the fact is, a format is out there where you can. That would be of interest to film fans and students.
