This is an enhancement request to ask for a count or even a visitor list of who has viewed a particular LD entry in LDDB.com.

It borrows from the watch facility on Ebay for sellers to help them gauge interest.

Some people will add the title to their wishlist and I know that is viewable but others may simple access the title but not specifically add it to their wishlist. This feature would allow a seller to see a count or even the list of visitors to a particular title If a date stamp was also added it would help show how recently someone viewed the title.

The main problem here is that the website is constantly crawled by all kinds of public, private, university projects, etc. search engines that would make this kind of counters rather useless. The number of hits on a page is not directly related to the level of interest it might draw. Deciding who's human online and who's not is a complex task.

These are the "official" bots and the number of hits this month alone:

Yandex bot   141,535
Unknown robot (identified by 'bot*')   123,709
Unknown robot (identified by 'robot')   82,027
MJ12bot   50,012
bingbot   40,442
yeti   38,766
Unknown robot (identified by 'crawl')   28,116
Googlebot   10,919
CFNetwork   7,499
Bing Preview bot   3,389

I only have wishlists to express direct "human" interest today.

I agree it makes no sense tracking bots so how about tracking views for users who have actually logged in with a proper account. All of those are hopefully real people and real views.

It would then display titles of most interest viewed either by count of visits and/or usernames and dates.

Sadly, the bot counts is done by an external script (AWStats) and it only matches the bots based on the signature string they provide honestly, it would be easy to pretend you're any version of Chrome instead to obfuscate your purpose. And the parsing script is unaware of LDDb session, only parsing Apache 2 logs.

At some point I put an anonymous log on the search box to try to improve the results but it only shows a lot of typos and trial and error spelling, not really useful information. Of course whenever someone famous passes away, the number of searches increases. But I can't know which title is selected after that.

If you want my best guess, the most checked LDs will be the usual The Matrix, Star Wars in all shapes and forms, some Star Trek, some DTS, Alien(s), Terminator 2, Disney, etc.

Anonymous (non official bot, but can't tell if human or not) top 10 hits this month from the Apache 2 logs are:

  1. Fantasia (1940) [1132 AS]
  2. Cartoon Classics: Here's Donald/Here's Goofy [396 AS]
  3. Cartoon Classics: Donald: Limited Gold Edition (Uncut) [SF068-1086]
  4. Arena (1989) [NALA-10011]
  5. Star Wars Trilogy: Definitive Collection [0693-84]
  6. Alien (1979) [8760-85]
  7. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) [PILF-2830]
  8. Adventures of Chip 'n' Dale, The (1959) [D61-506]
  9. Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Special Edition (1991) (Uncut) [PSE82997-6WS]
  10. Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck Cartoon Collections: vol.2 [70 AS]

I have no idea how realistic that list really is.

In theory such a feature would encourage people to bid in a hurry, thereby driving up prices. It would also alert sellers to what they should working on hyping up. eBay has a lot of features like this because higher and higher prices are what they want because they get points on everything sold. They don’t do it for users they do it for themselves.

I hate the idea, but then I’m not a volume seller. Anyone with a mountain of “valuable” stuff that won’t move at the desired price would see more in it.

I like how the SW Definitive Collection continues to be popular despite all of it's problems.

Well, it is pretty awesome. And heavy. Also they made tons of them so it’ll change hands a lot.
