Agree, I do miss those that are on the LDs with Chinese and English, its just a time that no longer is and was to my knoledge
only burned in so it would only be on LDs, VHS or possibly some DVDs where they were transferred from one of those, or theatrical prints.

I don't even think any of the Kung Fu films I've been watching have them on DVD, some are horrible transfers from VHS but
no bilingual subs.

I went mildly nuts recently, got these in over the last couple days. They were both really good deals, by current prices at least.

I agree 100 %. Hong Kong films on a LD from Hong Kong without any subs would be the exception. Most had bilingual subs as did many of the VCD releases up until the late 2000s. It didn't bother me at all. I would often learn some Chinese expressions from these bilingual subs.

In Malaysia they even have trilingual subs. I once watched a decent horror flick from Thailand in a Malaysian cinema and it had subs in English, Chinese and Malaysian, all three of them.

Well in those stories the good guys wore white to show all the blood.
But that's part of the fun to read nothing when subs are on the screen.

picked up this version of Artoria Pendragon/Saber a few years back for $70 shipped.
she normally goes for around $200 or more, at least on EBAY.

she's got Die-Cast armor and an Excalibur blade that ends up giving her an uncommon heft in hand,
closer to that of a 1970's all-metal Mecha toy than that of your typical 27cm. Character Doll...

She looks quite nice as a doll as well, tasuke.

The cool thing about Saber is that she is so popular you can get her in basically whichever outfit you want. Even stuff that appears in only 1 episode. She has 379 doll/figure entries on myfigurecollection... This one I got actually comes with another sword as well but I like the one I put in her hands to display better.

Random tangent: I would never buy or sell this kind of stuff on eBay. Too worried about scam buyers as well as people selling fake figures. So I only buy new or do peer to peer transactions as it were with forum users, with documentation of original purchase. Plus eBay usually has big mark-up anyway, as you noted.

I buy most of my second hand goods from Mandarake. Even western toys. They're a lot cheaper there and since I have to pay international shipping anyway, it hardly matters where I buy them from.

Probably the best example of the ebay markup is the fact that people usually want over 400 dollars for a MISB USS Voyager from Playmates. I got one from Mandarake for less than 100, and I think that was with shipping.

I checked them out when you mentioned them awhile back and they are very legit. Some great LD prices though obviously their selection isn't super great.

The first time I saw City Hunter (JC version) it was basically impossible to read the subs through half the movie. It was a cropped 4:3 release of some sort so sometimes the complete text didn’t even fit the screen. There were Chinese and English subs in white, it was a weak projector...just a wall of white often times.

Yellow is the color for subs btw. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with people who can’t understand that. It’s one thing if you’re using a optical process that only worked in white but that’s not the case with anything from the DVD era on up.

If you don’t mind them being “burned in” as people say, LD had the best subtitles around. They didn’t have the color restrictions of DVD and they didn’t rely on decoders that almost always suck. There was nothing to set up or turn on. They looked exactly like they did in the studio.

Animeigo ruled at subs, obviously. :)

indeed. Artoria Pendragon/Saber has got got the the No.1 most enduringly popular Anime character of the 21st century.

i mean, Fate; Stay/Night came along somewhere in the early-2000's, -first as an Eroge Visual Novel, IIRC-
and it all exploded in popularity like a nuclear warhead from thence onward,
and STILL manages to remain one of the prime pillars of modern Anime fandom to this second.

that said, though i admire "Saber" as a character, i really cannot understand what exactly makes Fate such an evergreen Anime franchise.

i mean, Artoria herself is a fine character, and all, but i've seen FAR more attractive and likable Anime character come and go,
often arriving with precious little fanfare, and leaving with even less.

the Fate Anime adaption, -at least the early-2000's original- was thoroughly awful, -IMO- and from what i've looked into,
the original VN inspiration is hardly any better. also, the franchise in general seems... rather viciously Chauvinistic, quite toxically so, in fact.

in sum, while i do like Artoria/Saber as a female Anime character... the franchise she hails from, well... let us say that i'd prefer to pretend that it does not really exist...

I never did finish the original anime myself. This is definitely an instance where I just think the character looks nice as a figure. Contrast with my Selvaria figures which I have in part because Valkyria Chronicles is one of my absolute favorite games.

indeed, VC is brilliant, one of the very best PS3 titles to have ever released.

i have both the PS3 original, as well as the PS4 steelbook remaster edition...

Well I just got these.

Image

I didn't actually have to buy the Japanese pressing of the Meco album. It's just that when I get an idea, it's hard for me to let go of it, and in this case it was me seeing the album for sale on a domestic webstore but it'd disappeared from the catalog when I was finally going to buy it, and although I later discovered it actually has the same UPC as the earlier US pressing so it was probably that one that I saw (although the US one is from the late 90's and the Japanese one is from 2016, so who knows), I'd become too fixated on the idea of getting the Japanese one.

While in Japan purchased a Japanese region A blu ray player. Now I can import Asian and North American discs as much as I want.
