Have an X9 which when playing NTSC discs has horizontal lines of different brightness that appear to flicker over the screen.

The problem is intermittent and does not always occur at the same places on a disc, though it is obviously more noticeable in darker scenes when it happens.

The photos below were taken off screen from still frames on a CLV disc, so the only thing I know for sure is the problem is before the frame store for the pause. (Hi-Vision/Muse discs play fine.) Pretty much makes NTSC on this player too annoying to watch.

Not sure where to even start to try to fix this, hoping someone might have experienced something similar and be able to help or if anyone has any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

I would put my money on caps that need to be tested/replaced.

Wondering what will my X9 say to me after another 12-month (non-A/C) storage time in Singapore...

Yes - that seems a likely possibility. Just need to narrow down where the problem is.

So today I swapped out the NTSC ASSY board with another player (thinking since this only appears with NTSC that might be a good place to start). Still happening.

Think next I'll swap out the MOTHER ASSY board to see if that's where the problem is. That's probably a bigger job than a straight swap as I assume the laser alignments will need to be adjusted for this player/laser. Probably no time this weekend; so a project for next.

Ok so I couldn't wait.

Swapped the MOTHER ASSY board over. More straight forward than thought it might be; just set the alignment pots to the same positions as the board it was replacing which was good enough for the exercise.

And then the problem was gone! Just to be absolutely sure the problem wasn't something like a loose connector I put the original board back in and the problem was back.

So the issue is something on the MOTHER ASSY board. Unfortunately My actual understanding of electronic circuit troubleshooting is basically non-existent.

At this point I'm considering just having the whole board re-capped with new electrolytics since these are very often the issue with older electronics. Unless anyone with more repair experience has any ideas where to focus on this board that might be causing the problem?

Well I guess that's the easy way. Until there are no working players left...
