Hello everyone !
Long time no see !
After my TV completely died, I have been busy to buy a projector (Projectors : HU80KS (HU80KA) VS EH-TW8400 (EH-TW9400)), and change everything in my settings. I also had to buy a HDMI splitter (Orei, very happy with it !) to connect my PC. (As I have now 3 sources out : projector, PC screen and capture card.)
Now, everything is back to normal ! Then I can share with you my captures and review (in french only !)

Movie : Tous les matins du monde (460 001) PAL
LD player : LD-V4300D (Video out)
Deinterlacer : Lumagen 2144 in movie mode
Capture card : Live Gamer HD 2
Movie size : Letterbox
review in french : https://retro-visual.jimdo.com/laserdisc/une-semaine-un-film/tous-les-matins-du-monde/
LD Quality : 3.5/5
A good quality movie for a PAL LD ! Can't beat NTSC movies on LD-X1, CLD-959 although.

I added a newcategory on my website !
the thema is :
"Pole dance in LD movies"
2 purposes : 1. getting an good excuse to take capture. 2. proving there is a cause and effect relationship in a movie between pole dance scenes quality and the mediocrity of the movie :) .
Here is my first capture : a very good Pole dance film in my opinon, in a very bad movie : Species II !
link to my page : https://retro-visual.jimdo.com/laserdis ... ld-movies/

my capture :
LD reference : PILF-2724
Player : CLD-959
Upscaler : lumagen
Lumagen mode : video
Contrast : high
Scene : Face A / min 53"
scene length : 30 seconds
sexy : ★★★★★
dance performance : ★★★★☆
camera / picture : ★★★☆☆
A very good pole dance scene in a passable movie. A little bit short, but the rhythm and choreography are good. The dancer is skillful and beautiful.

have a good time !

Edit : I think there is a long version of the scene at the end (cut scenes) of the LD. I will check this week end.

A very bad pole dance scene in one of the worst movie ever. Poles are even not real poles, just plastic bars. The girls can't do anything with that. The dancers are hired only for their artificial too big breast. They don't have any knowledge or dancing skills. The idea of "neon pole" is not a bad idea, as it has a certain artistic sense. But that's all. A girl is kicking a bad boy at the middle of the scene. It was fun !

Thank you forper ^^ !

Here is a different cut of the Species 2 scene. I found it at the end of the disc in cut scene bonus !

Species II (cutscene)
LD reference : PILF-2724
Player : CLD-959
Upscaler : lumagen
Lumagen mode : video
Contrast : high
NR : High (bad video source)
Scene : Face B / min 42"
scene length : 57 seconds
sexy : ★★★★☆
dance performance : ★★★★★
camera / picture : ★☆☆☆☆
The total length performance is really impressive, but this cut has been shot by an other camera in a poor definition. 4/3 size, and point of view is far from the quality of the shot taken for the movie.

Berverly Hills Cop

LD reference : PILF-2043

Upscaler : lumagen 2144

Contrast : low
Brightness : high
Scene : Face A / min 51"
scene length : 77 seconds
sexy : ★☆☆☆☆
dance performance : ★★☆☆☆

Berverly Hills Cop is clearly not a bad movie, and this is maybe why the pole dance scene doesn't have a real erotic potential. The dancer seems to have dance skills, but there is not enough time to appreciate it. The place and the scene is just a pretext here to inject a dose of humour in the relation between the main characters.

OK ! Let's go for showgirls ! Took me some hours to do this job, but proud of it ;)

Showgirls (Nomi's dance 1)
LD reference : ML105525
Player : CLD-959
Upscaler : lumagen 2144
Lumagen mode : auto(15)
Brightness - contrast : normal
Scene : Face A / min 25"
scene length : 118 seconds
sexy : ★★★☆☆
dance performance : ★★★★☆
camera / picture : ★★★★★

Nomi's dance in Showgirls is really disturbing, because she doesn't dance as a professionnal, but as a real actress. We can cleary feel in this scene that she does'nt want to stay in that world. She is searching for something more artistic, maybe... The result is a good dance scene, but certainly more impressive than sexy.

Image

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Showgirls (Background)
LD reference : ML105525
Player : CLD-959
Upscaler : lumagen
Lumagen mode : auto(15)
Brightness - contrast : normal
Scene : Face A / min 27"
scene length : 77 seconds
sexy : ★★★☆☆
dance performance : ★★★☆☆
camera / picture : ★★★★★

This "background pole dance scene" is more classical, with professionnal dancers, doing well their job, but only here to create an atmosphere for the movie. Dancers are good. Choregraphy could have been more elaborate, but the function of this scene is to focus on Nomi, not on background charaters.

Image

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Showgirls (Nomi's dance 2)
LD reference : ML105525
Player : CLD-959
Upscaler : lumagen 2144
Lumagen mode : auto(15)
Brightness - contrast : normal
Scene : Face A / min 37"
scene length : 43 seconds
sexy : ★★★★☆
dance performance : ★★★☆☆
camera / picture : ★★★★★

In this scene, Nomi is becoming less and less professionnal, more and more sexual and agressive. This is her last pole dance scene, and we can feel this is the limit before something bad happen. She seems to be sick of this world. She pulls her partener by her hairs, scold bar clients, does a really angry face. In those conditions, she is so intense (and her body is so perfect !) that it's impossible to not fall into her charm !

You know, I've never actually seen Showgirls - but after all the stuff I've heard about it being really bad, but I think it was someone's second hand comment posted on the blu-ray forum on it that really sold it for me; their friend had said something in the lines of "this movie has so much t***y it actually gets kind of boring"

Youtube can't even understand the difference between art (scenes in movies, officially rated !) and pornography...
I tried a claim. We will see.

edit : they removed the "species 2" uncut scene, but not the "showgirls" one... That's strange as the species video is really soft compared to the showgirls scenes !

It’s very entertaining if you hate mainstream Hollywood crap and want enjoy other people’s massively horrible garbage. It’s hubris totally off the (probably white) rails. It pretends to lampoon something but actually IS the exact thing it’s claiming to send up. I mean, everyone involved should have never worked again and the pervert dads that made this movie an international hit on video will probably burn in Hell but its hilarious. A mega budget version of The Room.

From an LD a perspective the 5.1 is cool and the transfer is very nice.

As someone with a guaranteed no interest in all the gratuitous t***y in this movie (bye bye pervert dads) it still strikes me as some kind of strangely inspired/misunderstood genius on Paul Verhoeven's part. I never saw it (but heard so much either way) before getting it on LD. So much of his feel/style of Robocop/Total Recall/Starship Troopers is all there in this, just with lots of t*ts and the wonderfully ott delivery of Elizabeth Berkley as Nomi Malone.

People seem to fall into two camps as to whether PV was trying to be all totally serious or had his tongue firmly in cheek. I go with the latter - especially because of how so many similarities I feel with the aforementioned movies; all of which feature a level of overblown comic-like storytelling (not to mention some bloodthirsty violence which also makes it's way in a very confronting way into Showgirls).

I refuse to believe that there is even a shred of Robocop in this horrible POS. It wasn’t promoted as a camp joke until it was obvious that nobody would welcome it as anything else. It was a crap follow up to the crap Basic Instinct and it worked really well on that level. They thought every one of their idiotic lines was really badass and cool.

Make a terrible movie that gives boners to a few people by having a once child actor finally take all her clothes off (no need to jerk off to paused VHS tapes of Saved By the Bell). Then claim that people can’t see the movie for it’s real strengths because people they are hung up on nudity. I have zero hangups about nudity, the dialogue in this movie is *terrible* yet they massively overpaid the writer and not the girls. So its filled with naked people but the only actual screwing is in the labor department.

As I said, I enjoy this movie a lot. I discovered in on cable with all the nudity blurred (hilarious in itself) and I watch it every few years. It IS total garbage though. Anyone who thinks this is some sort of witty self aware expose on the excesses of Vegas or whatever the current line is sadly is just falling for marketing hype. There is no meta level. This movie is straight up what it is...terrible...with no layers at all - but the power of suggestion is a powerful tool...especially if it vindicates the viewer.

lol

How often does the marketing department agree or give a s**t about any motivations (ulterior or otherwise) of the director?

This fell between Basic Instinct and Starship Troopers yet for me feels so much more like Starship Troopers/Robocop/Total Recall than anything even close to Basic Instinct.

Once child... Cheap p0rn.... Boo Hoo couldn't give a sh*t. They can wear out their VHS tapes all they like; my opinion of the movie is more likely to be diminished due to the nipples; not increased.

Is it awful? Yes. But did PV manage to make it inspired awful? Yes. I'm not claiming any 'self aware expose's' just that maybe PV recognised a POS he was likely by then stuck with and polished it as best he could....

I dunno, The Room never really appealed to me. I think I watched it once but remember next to nothing about it. I guess I just gravitate towards genre trash rather than just plain trash. In the other hand, I think it probably just struck me as an awful movie, rather than movie that is enjoyably awful.
