well, i stumbled upon these mini-monitors at my local GW just yesterday for $20.00.

i nearly passed them by, but noticing the make, and knowing something of the reputation they have, i decided to at least have a close look.

i was immediately impressed by the weight, for the size, and the build quality, which definitely felt upper scale.

i do not care for tiny speakers, and i prefer to stick tightly beside the familiar classic Japanese brands,
but these POLKs felt like a rare steal of a deal that i'd be a fool to pass up.

well, i'm certainly glad i didn't.

it is unreal; these tiny boxes cast a HUGE stage for their size, and, more importantly,

they bloom with dimension and detail that every previous speaker pair i've ever used only seems to hint at, by direct comparison.

Detail!! well-rounded details that got at least semi-obscured in the muddle of the soundscape in previous speaker systems

are clearly, precisely delineated with these decidedly Mighty Midgets.

in sum. i've never heard ANY of my favorite music blossom the way that they do with these POLK R10s.

as much as it irks me on a superficial level to break up the all-PIONEER audio chain i've maintained for over a decade now,

i am QUITE SOLD on these diminutive POLKs.

indeed, perhaps pursuing a pair of full size POLKs of similar design may prove the single greatest system upgrade i'll ever likely be able to afford to make...

Have you searched the model? Wonder if they are part of a set of 5 possibly due to the hanger hole on the back.

I broke my all Sony audio chain this year. I bought Bose 101ITs for my bedroom setup and yeah it hurts me to compromise on brand too (would get a nice modern set of ES bookshelves if I had the money) but the Bose speakers sound so good for the money..

Once you go from a 2 way to a 4 way or even 5 way you will never care the size and must have the 4 or 5 way monsters.
I could be happy with a 3 way speaker but right now have 4 and regret selling the 5 ways I had once. They were AMAZING.

funny thing, is that these tiny TWO-WAY POLKs somehow manage to beat the pants off of the large, full-size FOUR-WAY PIONEERs
that have been the unbeatable mainstay of my system since i found them at a thrift back in late-2006.

these mighty midgets bloom and blossom with fine detail and soundstaging that the large, impressive-looking PIONEERs only hinted at...

Some well designed little two-ways sound better than that kind of 4 way speaker??

Not even slightly surprised, seems an obvious outcome really.

You only use a lot of drivers because they don’t have the range of higher quality drivers or the box stinks. Now the weakness of each driver and it’s place on the crossover is exposed. Keep adding drivers to add weak points or overly represented areas. You think you’re filling holes but you’re adding them.

These days it’s pretty hard to find anything build 80s style, with super conspicuous cones and ports and badges all over the place. There are loads of speakers with one active driver that would blow either of these speakers away.

yeah Sony speakers suck.

My AL5 Mk IIs are the worst speakers I've ever heard.

And the ES bookshelves I auditioned in Sony store are the second worst.

Also I don't regret selling those SSB-1000s I had before at all. They sucked and were probably the 3rd worst speakers I've ever heard. If you want a pair now they're really easy to get and the price is super low.

Sony just isn't really close to hi-fi. I've never listened to a Sony speaker and thought "this is good". They do have some really nice headphones for their price range though.

i have a pair of SS-U560s i paid almost nothing for at a "Name Your Price" rummage sale a year or two ago.

driven by a YAMAHA R-9 A/V stereo receiver they serve quite handily for my computer sound system;

They're quite nice!

Reminds me of my old trusty KEF Coda 8 during my school years.

I mean real hi fi not just stuff labeled as such. Lots of garbage calls itself hi fi. Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to audio. I like Magnepan a lot, Klipsch has some good products and some overblown. KEF and B&W are also good brands usually. I don't think Sony is on the level of these brands. There are some other brands as well that some swear by, but I haven't tried enough myself to speak on.

It's been awhile since I listened to a serious Sony speaker so I really couldn't tell you models. Right now I do have some entry level Sony surround stuff lying around, don't think it's even fair to consider that.

Well Sony is a mega corporation, they produce garbage for the masses and very fine hi end stuff as well, always have.

This place is turning into bizarro world. "Sony ES speakers aren`t real hifi speakers", "Star Trek VI is better than TMP - IV"

ooookaaaaaaay
