This player, well maintained and used lightly, has started to have trouble starting up side B. The disc reverses, speeds up, the laser makes the turn to the right place, all normal, but then there is a tiny ticking noise and it typically takes about 10-15 seconds for it to find the track and start playback of the disc. I've tried adjusting the usual pots but to no avail.

Side A is fine. And there is no slipping at all. Side B always eventually starts playing, but depending on the disc it can take even 20 or more seconds.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Is this with all discs???
I know that I have this issue with all players when trying hard to read discs like Discovision.
So is it possible that its a bad disc?

Also could it be the laser going?

Could be a Side B centering issue or maybe a dirty spindle (telltale sign would be the sound of slipping as the disc changes direction from A to B).

Centering may be possible.
The R7G has a special white material on the table that won't degrade like the rubber mats on other similar players.
Unless you are saying the actual spindle that is going bad?

Centering is my thought too. I've seen crazy things happen when the centering is off, even though the picture looks ok.

Thanks guys.

It is with all discs, CLV and CAV.

There is no slipping.

What is meant by centering and is there something I can do to fix it?

I agree, centering is the first thing to check here before anything else.

The Centering adjustment is a lateral adjustment which moves the pickup rail left or right. If it is not centered properly, the laser is picking hitting the track off-center. There is a lock screw on the top of the b-side mechanism and on the right, an adjustment which will move the assembly left and right. Loosen the screw and adjust the mechanism slightly either direction while the pickup is trying to read the TOC. Once you find the "sweet spot", tighten the lock screw.
