Hey guys! :)

For those who don't know me I have been assisting on the latest Hong Kong bluray releases being put out by such companies as Criterion, Eureka & 88 Films in the UK.

My main job is to make sure all the films get proper original Cantonese mono audio.

The problem is in many cases the original mono tracks no longer exist or are lost so I have to seek out the LDs for the best sounding audio.

If anyone has a large Hong Kong film collection on laserdisc please contact me and maybe you can help me present definitive versions of future bluray releases of HK classics.

I hope to hear from some of you soon! :)

Hi, can you name some of the releases where you actually helped Criterion retrieve the original mono audio track ? I thought they would just get it from the studio which holds the rights to these films ?

I have been involved with every single HK release Eureka has put out since their Police Story set.

I actually supplied Criterion with multiple audio tracks for the Police Story set and recently sourced audio for multiple titles they have not announced yet.

They did manage to get original audio for the first Police Story film but I supplied the original mono for both cuts of Police Story 2 and the English dub for Part 1.

Fortune Star who holds the rights to most of these films no longer has the original mono tracks in alot of cases.

If you check the booklet for Criterion's Police Story I'm credited as Irongod2112. :)

If you need more convincing I'm mentioned in the bluray.com review for Criterion's Police Story.

Awesome.

These discs can obviously be pretty hard to find too. I've been wanting many myself and buying them when they pop up.

Please PM me with what you have and we can discuss payment if you have something I need.

I don't normally offer payment for this is a voluntary situation.

However I can reimburse in product if you like HK films on bluray. :)

I can also get your name in the special thanks section in the booklets if I wind up using the audio.

So you ripped the mono audio track from the Police Story 2 LD and supplied it to Criterion ? Really ?

Yes, that article seems to confirm it.

However I am still baffled that the original studio wouldn't be able to provide Criterion with the original soundtrack ??? I mean they have to use it if they want to create a 5.1 upmix, right ?

And the only source for the English dub was a Dutch VHS ??? Wow.

Sorry I was wrong, I don't have Yes Madam, it's a different movie I was thinking of. Good luck in your search.

WOW so Criterion, Eureka and 88 Films sound like a bunch of cheap fu--s.
I'm not doing work for you or them for free.

They only pay the film companies and then don't get all the material they need and then make fans like us to do the work
for free.

I think you are missing the point.

The Chinese company Fortune Star is the one not able to supply the materials to the labels.

So fans like me and many others contribute what we can in order to get the films released correctly.

We do not care about money for we just want our favorite HK films released correctly. In return we get free copies of the blurays and the films get a definitive release.

All of these companies should be applauded for letting fans participate not be called cheap.

Anyhow I can now see this may have not been the best place to post looking for help. Lol

I entirly concur with irgongod2112's statement. This is not about making money.

I love every single release Criterion has put out so far on Blu Ray, DVD or Laserdisc. The Blu Ray release of Thin Red Line is just beyond fantastic.
And I think getting a free copy of the Blu Ray that one has made a contribution to in a substantial manner should be reward enough.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you with your request, irongod2112, as I simply do not own these movies on laserdisc.

I for my part always prefer listening to the original soundtrack of a film instead of a 5.1 upmix with entirely different sound effects, etc. The only thing I do not understand is
how these upmixes are created. These studios must have the original soundtrack in order to create these upmixes. I do not understand.

No Criterion and all film companies are missing the point they are a business and how do they expect us to work for them for free when they
are making money.

But I guess its easy for someone like you irongod, you must have bottomless pockets and can afford to do work for free.

I've got a house and a small business that I could use help with since you do work for free

These are companies that couldn’t insure their stunt men. They don’t have a Disney Vault or whatever. The goal was to put the movie in the theater and make the money.

Rein-O is being a capitalist jerk. Please disregard him and his need for compensation at every turn. It can’t be cured. He won’t let go of any LD without a markup, apparently he even charges for copies.

OK Comrade.

I'm sorry to all that someone wants me or others to get gear make acceptable copies of audio tracks for some larger capitalist company
and just give it to them for free.

I wouldn't be doing this for free in any world.

There is something I simply do not understand. If the original mono audio track is missing, what are these new 5.1 and even 7.1 ! upmixes based on ?
