I noticed there's two releases with different reference numbers but are otherwise identical, True Lies (1994) [PILF-7321] and True Lies (1994) [PCLH-00001] - the only difference in the database entries is that one says the subtitles are "in picture" and the other "out of picture", can anybody confirm this?

admin wrote: The PILF-xxxx might be a reprint but it would be unusual the price remained the same. Both appear to have the same release date as well. I think the most likely explanation is that they're actually the same disc, only with different reference numbers, and the difference in the subtitles is entirely due to the people who filled that field having different ideas of what is considered "in" and "out" of picture. Still, it'd be nice to see some mint marks and be certain.

That would at least explain the "Director's Pan & Scan Edition" on the US cover which I found a rather strange statement. I think those "Directors P&S" are something of a hybrid situation where Cameron reframed for the 4:3 edition so sometimes it's more like open matte, sometimes closer to true P&S, not consistently one or the other through the movie.

That would seem likely since IMDB lists a rather odd combination of Super 35 and Vistavision for special effects, so presumably some shots only exist in the wider ratio and had to be presented in old fashioned pan & scan, however VistaVision aspect ratio is 1.85:1 so the pan & scan version would presumably still show more on the top and bottom than the full widescreen release. Not that any of this really matters because in situations like these the open matte version really should be treated as a secondary interest, a curiosity more than anything else, while the main attraction should be the proper Scope version, much like how I have some passing interest in something like the fullscreen versions of the Back to the Future trilogy, only because I already own the movies in properly matted blu-ray.

In the special edition of T2, there is a sequence in the supplements where the entire 35mm image is shown with red and blue boxes representing how the 1.33 and 2.35 frames are assembled for video. One could describe it as a hybrid as Takeshi666 describes, but it's closer to a complete rescan of the camera negative for each edition of the film.

Also the fact that I have no DTS capable equipment at all so it wouldn't benefit me anyway. But yeah, price is a factor too.

I can't even guess how much that would cost since there are no machines or tapes currently on ebay. It's also one of the few movies on D-Theater that isn't on blu-ray yet.
