Thanks for your post Sonicboom. Sounds promising I'll try again today. The clock/sync issue might be the problem since when I record for a 5 minutes I only get about 9 seconds of audio fuzz.

Just one question could you tell me what "(word) clock source" is? Thanks

I tried again and same crap. How come 4 minutes of recording = 9 seconds of fuzz? I can't find a clock or sync setting anywhere in Audacity or on my puter. I think my hardware just be busted like I thought the first time. Usual ebay of today. 50% chance of item being lost, broken, faulty or fake. I hate evilbay

Four minutes of recording should get you four minutes of fuzz. What exactly are you trying to do?

yeah, local from a seller you trust like Mark (Got a few discs from him about a year ago, well packed and no issues) is the only way you avoid GST and all the other BS that goes with buying on ebay these days.

I'm getting an Akina Nakamori disc from him as well as that lot. Pretty happy with that. I wish I could buy more with the flat postage but I generally want the US edition of American films, especially if the Jsubs are going to be in-picture.

He seems like a nice bloke, yeah he packs well and he's sending an alt replacement title (Solar Crisis) for a cracked one I got (Never Say Never Again).

I don't mind LD subs generally, a lot of stuff I already have on VHS/DVD/BD anyway.

Watched my Saving Private Ryan from him last night, very well presented and brought back the cinema experience with volume high. However the in picture subs just detracted a little from all the masterful shots and ultimately it's not the final perfect edition so I'll be selilng it on and keep on waiting for the AUD to recover so I can buy the US edition. I think The Thin Red Line, which I also got and I consider a very worthy companion to SPR, has the subs in the black bars so more or less hideable with my DVDO.

Yep, I've got no worries dealing with Mark. I just noticed that my Heat LD was missing from my package, I've contacted him and I'm sure he'll forward it.

In PCM capturing news someone responded to my post on Head Fi and mentioned this:

"Maybe the CM6206 can only handle 48k sample rates on S/PDIF? The data sheet says "S/PDIF I/O 48 KHz sampling rate" a couple of places. Laserdisc audio (including DTS) is at 44.1."

https://www.head-fi.org/threads/capturi ... t-15137016

Interesting! So I might try the M-Audio transit when I can afford it.

Ok, that is something that actually makes sense why it isn't working then. Strange that something wouldn't accept the consumer standard sample rate of 44.1KHz. Anyway, move on. That M-Audio box is actually perfect for your application. Its cheap and has very humble requirements. It even will pass through AC3/DTS. I'd read up online about using it with whatever OS you're on. It may have some buggy limitation in Windows.

As for clock sync, read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_clock So basically think of digital as a stream of info running at a certain speed (44,100 cycles per second in this case) controlled by a clock. When two different systems need to work together they need to decide who is the master clock signal. Usually it should be the source if you don't have a separate master clock source like many studios have. If you set the receiving end to be the master there is a chance you may have jitter or drop outs due to a clocking mismatch.

Now look at the setting/preferences in Audacity or whatever DAW you're using. I use a MOTU product that has a software panel that controls all that stuff. I just choose the clock source from a drop down menu. Your system will have be different so just look around.

Okay thanks sonicboom, and thanks for clarifying the clock thing. I'm moving but after I get set up and have some spare cash I'll order that M Audio unit and report back here.

Crying with happiness right now. After an hour of trying to get the Transit to record through the main SPDIF port I finally realised that's not the IN port dumbass! Tiny arrows denote in and out on the unit. I broke out one of my ancient SPDIF block jack to mini jack cables and it's golden. I'm now listening to a playback of the PCM from Video Girl Ai disc 1 (because I have no other discs not packed up right now)

Put 'er down to human error

..and thank you Sonicboom for the Transit recommendation. I will conduct many PCM transfers now I have the capability! 8-)

Okay , okay if you guys died I would be sad for a bit

Glad to see a hint of humanity back in this thread :-)

Now the next step (I never managed to perform successfully) was to acquire the AC3 bitstream out of an AC3RF demodulator or the DTS soundtrack.

Can this be done? (and replayed as-is).

I've successfully captured AC3 many times, but I wasn't able to get a complete DTS track out of the one DTS disc I captured (Hard Target (1993) [PILF-2647]). Need to try different capturing software, I think.

That fortunately is not the reason as I have the same card and it is in fact capable of recording both*, 44.1 kHz as well as 48 kHz with 16 Bit. Using the interface "WASAPI" and 24 Bit recording in Audacity also gives me the unaltered bitstream. Setting 16 Bit in the settings right away before recording leads to data corruption of the "least significant bit" due to dithering, though.

* for some odd reason, the output indeed only seems to support 48 kHz. :(

Your issue with that card however looks like to be rather caused by the source, cabling or a defective exemplar of your C-Media 6206-LX.

Back in the good old days I used a software called "Cool Edit" the record audio from LD.
I assume it has not been updated in ages and only works on Windows XP, but it was pretty awesome back then.

I still use Cool Edit Pro 2.1 from like 2002. I like it a lot better than Audacity, and it works fine in Windows 10.

Finally getting around to capturing all my music LDs now. M-Audio and Audacity working like a charm

Now who PMed me here wanting a PCM capture of my Woodstock discs?

Edit: actually capturing the Woodstock discs now and I remember how much dialogue there is which is useless to me without the visuals, will just capture the songs for walkman playback, the original requestor probably isn't interested.

I am doing something similar with the few music discs in my collection. Tina Turner Nice n Rough is one of them as that isn't available on any audio format afaik. The 1982 live concert that is, not the Wife Beater and Tina Turner album of the same name from 1984.

Also going to do that whopper classical woodworking LD I have too. Using a Zoom U44 for digital audio and a Yamaha Pocketrak W24 for analog PCM.
