I understand that they are recordable Laserdiscs, and that these ones specifically are the consumer versions that play on a standard player. I haven't gotten a chance to see if there is anything on them (will do so when I get home from work) - and the seller didn't even own a Laserdisc Player. Also if it helps, both side B's are Red, I know they came in a few colors.

I can't seem to find any information on what happened to "Laserdisc Recording Center, Inc" or anything.

So here are the few things I'm curious about, if these do have something on them, can it be rewritten? If they can be rewritten does anyone have the device to do such a thing (I know they are quite large and very very hard to come by), and lastly are these worth anything at all? I love collecting laser-discs, but these don't entirely fit with my collection very well- and I can't find a single other one that's been sold online to compare prices, and LDDB also has no record of sale.

Sorry for the long ramble, here's a few pictures of the things from the online listing, I'll take some fresh ones when I see if there's anything on them in the morning.

The cases are freaking dope, almost 2 inches thick.

You'd hate me if I told you how little I paid for these.

That depends entirely on what's actually on them :P

Yeah, if they are junk they are junk.

I don't even know if you can actually play those in regular LD players, there are some that you can but others you can't.

I remember Pbiancardi had a recordable disc of something on ebay, took awhile to sell it and it was something interesting
not amazing but cool.

Alright. Quick update. Both discs play on my player, and are blank. The only thing on every side is 30 minutes of the old "Off the air bars", which to my understanding means they are blank.

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about.

I've seen mentions of a couple people with the recorders, does anyone here have one?

Yes that. I haven't seen any in well over 10 years.

$8, I'm pretty sure if they had dwarf p0rn on them I'd still consider that a deal.

Well that's a bit disappointing, would've been cool if they'd had bloopers or dailies from a movie or something.

Although they're still pretty cool for what they are. And I bet dumb@$$es would still rather pay two grand for 6th Day than give these a second thought. :P

Lmao couldn't be more true.

At this point I'm going to try to track down someone with a recorder, and put the Star Wars Holiday special on them or something.

You will never record onto these. In the years I’ve been a member of this forum (only like six I think, others have been here much longer) this same subject has come up at least three times and nobody has ever recorded anything yet and gotten back to us. Some have shown a great deal of determination but once they realize it’s virtually impossible to find a running machine they give up. These are not consumer products. You will not be able simply to eBay one of these players and have it sent via priority mail to your house where you can just plug two things in and get going. If any of these recorders exist at all they will need to be freight delivered and then because I’m sure it’s broke you need a guy who can fix a $100,000 player that Pioneer didn’t build. (IIRC).

For one thing this stuff is all pre-internet so you need to find people via email, using old books and magazines to answer your questions and that alone is more than most people are capable of.

If you have the means, I would just hire a private detective to find a still living tech that worked for the company. After he convinces you that it’s impossible or you manage to record something on the disc (Star Was, of course) please get back with us.

If they really do have a test pattern all the way through then honestly that’s kinda worth something, at least to me. It would be more convenient than setting it up to repeat the short ones on most discs, I guess. If this means “blank” (not a safe assumption unless you have specific info) then I guess they really are rewritable. Either that or they are just test pattern discs.

Fast forwarding through them, they go black after about 10 minutes, and then go back to the test pattern about 10 minutes after that.

I'm going to follow up with a guy who found someone to record some episode of "regular show" on Laserdisc, but couldn't find the disc itself to write on.

I know that post is three years old, but it's pretty much the only lead I have. Either way, I'm happy to have these in my collection knowing how much of an enigma they are.

I've never actually seen 6th Day. Is it really worse than watching 123 min of test pattern?

I will watch anything with Arnie in it. 6th day was not his worst. I have one of these blanks. I bought it from a guy who used to work for Philips. I believe you can record on one side only and one time so they are ld-r with 30 mins of recording. I might be wrong.

As signo said this has come up several times in the past 10 years or so and the closest we got to recording a new ld was cararte’s “lds are coming back soon, i am talking to a factory already “ a few years back lmao

Yeah, that guy sounded really determined when he was here. The issue with that kind of determination is that it was chosen before he even knew what the challenge really was.

First I would verify that they are in fact re-writable. If they aren’t then yours are done anyway and you can mercifully give up now. :)

Can't remember the actors name but the comedy relief in the film is annoying and I've never watched a second time.
I wish I had a copy to take some fools money for 1 grand  or whatever you can get for a copy.

As for these discs with a test pattern, while still neat I guess the guy that got your 8 bucks is laughing that you have 20 minutes of test pattern

Yeah I have a soft spot for him too - despite the expected cynicism of "bodybuilder turned actor" he pulls it off in so many movies from Terminator to Kindergarten Cop to True Lies that it's not just a fluke. Full stop.

Yeah I'm definitely not as determined as the Regular Show guy. If I can I can, if I can't they'll sit on a shelf and be a cool talking piece.

That or I'll trade them for the Twin Peaks Laserdiscs.
