forper wrote: These just arrived from Jay-pan: Video Girl Ai complete set with Obis. Man this was my gateway fansub drug in the day. I loved this s**t. I bought all the original manga and tons of Katsura artbooks and stuff. This guy can draw my kinda gals.. Nice, I just watched my copies of these a month ago, it still holds up pretty good, especially the music (even the songs that Katsura-sensei sings). Need to re-watch DNA2 one of these days, too. Unfortunately there was some rot on the first 2 discs (both sides, I think), but they're still pretty watchable. Any show up on your copies? I wish I had VHS copies as well because of the obvious link to the content, but most copies out there now are ex-rentals...

The seller noted that there was some slight and short problem or distortion on disc 3 so I assume/hope if there was rot on the other discs he would have mentioned it. Maybe if you played it back in a nice bedroom SVHS deck and there was a power surge..who knows

at least you got Top Gun to compensate Watching Koyaanisqatsi might be an idea rather than a blind "seems like" comment, you might like it or some of it - perhaps not but any comment then may have some qualification.

The thing about films like Koyaanisqatsi is that it's less a movie and more like visual poetry - and much like art in general, is highly subjective; it's meaning is the one the viewer attributes to it. And if forper chooses to interpret it as "communist propaganda", I think it says more about him than it does about the movie.

signofzeta wrote: Is actual commie propaganda (ie: not Russian or Chinese anymore obviously) being exported at all anymore? I’d like to see some if anyone has any cool links. What’s the most culturally relevant (actually) communist country now? Vietnam? Vietnam is about as communist as China these days, and the only Chinese movie that was kind of(?) propagandaist was that sci-fi movie that came out a year or two ago and even then it's propaganda message was limited to something like "group is more important than the individual". I think North Korea is the only one still holding onto Stalinist values and producing actual propaganda movies, and I'm not even sure about that. I think there was a North Korean movie made in the last 20 years where the message was basically how you should be happy with your state-assigned job and never aspire to be anything more and the film was torn to shreds by foreign media, but I can't remember the name of it. I did learn of a Soviet movie called The Fall of Berlin from 1950 that was basically just Stalin fanfiction and I kind of want to see it solely because of how blatant, false and in bad taste the whole movie sounds.

ryosaeba84 wrote: Well I also looked up this koyaanisqatsi, and frankly it doesn't look like it's much more than intellectual onanism. I've watched it and obviously I disagree. Now I guess you could say that you could get the same effect by going out into the wilderness and then coming back to a city. *shrug* Commie propaganda is indeed an odd takeaway.
