Best options are to get some type of cleaner solution and wipe down the entire outside of player and take the top off and wipe the inside of the metal casing.
Then you have the chip board and parts, I would try to wipe down as much as possible and hope for the best. Unless you decide to make some type of box to fit the player in with baking soda and let it sit inside said box OR wash all the inside somehow you won't get rid of the smell 100% but it will mostly be gone. I can try leaving it in a cardboard box with some baking soda. signofzeta wrote: You have to run it. LD players are giant fans and running them hugely helps with this exact problem. I know since when I got my LD-W1 it smelled like a 1978 Trans Am.
It doesn’t sound like you’ll be able to live with the smell that long so please sell the smelly thing to me since I can handle it and I’d love to have another 99. I honestly haven't used it much at all since I bought it. I just couldn't stand the smell and packed it away for years. I may wind up trying to sell it. I will certainly let you know if I decide to do that. Thanks.

I have had this work and not work with books that stank. I'll keep a check on it but I don't think it will hurt anything.

In an attempt to get rid of the smell, I just did a light clean-up on the exterior of the casing (just water) and wiped away any heavy layer of dust in the player with a cloth (it was really just the tray since it was the only part that was exposed). It still smelled like a cigarette but after having it sit around exposed for at least a year it totally went away.
So in the end, just leave it out and let time resolve it. I would not recommend using any chemicals on it just in case it might damage the player. Thanks for the info. When I first bought it several years ago I took the top off and let it sit in a room with a fan for about a week or so. It didn't really help but maybe I just didn't give it enough time. This machine is very clean inside.
