Hi there! I'm going to be more of a lurker than anything, most likely - too young to have appreciated LD during its heyday (although I'm old enough to have used a couple players towards the end of the format's life in the US as a preteen/teenager), so I lack the technical knowledge or experience to contribute to the on-topic discussions. I don't even have a player yet (although I'm on the hunt for a non-Ebay option - if anyone has any leads for the Nashville area or within reasonable driving distance, I'm all ears!), but I'm looking to catch up.

I'm not a videophile/film buff by any means, and my primary interest is in the computer graphics discs I've seen floating around, although there are several Criterion discs and some other odds and ends I'd love to get my hands on eventually. My best friend, OTOH, is a huge film buff and he may get more use out of whatever player I do manage to find in terms of actual movie-watching

In any case, I'm looking forward to keeping up with the conversations here!

2 years too late, I would have sold you a player as I lived in Donelson but no longer.
Good luck, the pickings were really slim there.
Great Escape, phonolux and even mckays have LDs, mckays was actually cheap at around a quarter or so each.
Other than that I picked up a really bad player once with a lot of discs and the player died after 2 weeks one of the M series.

Welcome!!!

i was in my mid/late-teens back around 1996/1997, when my folks drug me along to a FUTURE SHOP, looking to buy a new bedroom TV and VCR. (they ended up with an RCA VCR and a PRO SCAN TV)

Bored, i wandered the place, browsing, and fiddling with floor models and such, until i came upon this weird, large unit that i managed to expel the tray on,
and, lo and behold, inside was the very first LD i ever recall seeing in my life. (Player must have been some entry-level PIONEER of the day, such as the CLD-S104 or the like)

being a dumb teen at the time, i didn't think much of it. fast forward to around 2000/2001, and, surfing the net for the first time,
i eventually get myself to browsing EBAY for PIONEER gear, and stumble upon the CLD-3030, a player i loved the looks of so much,
it sold me on it's host format instantaneously.

i actually managed to retain the original EBAY photo that sold me, lock, stock and barrel, all these years...

plus the photo of the example i was finally able to buy around 2007 or so, also from the BAY;

Hi crpen1992,

best of luck finding a player & spinning the big discs if or when that time comes.

You will find plenty of very helpful info on here & very good advice via the forum if required.

Look forward to any future posts.

Cheers,

John

Thanks for the welcomes everyone! I did manage to find a player, in the first place I looked in fact. I was in shock! It is a Pioneer LD-V8000 in excellent condition - I happened to see it sitting on the shelf for a cool $75. We're watching Gone With the Wind on it as I type.

Hello all.
I'm a LaserDisc VHS & DVD nut. Have two LaserDisc players.
A Pioneer and a Quasar. Bouth over 30 years old. And still, play great.
Two VHS players that play great. 75 Laserdisc. And picking up more as I go.
About 400 VHS tapes. And all kinds of DVDs.
The old-time fun way is a great way to watch movies.
