Have never seen a star trek episode or movie.
Which movie would you recommend me to watch first to see if its for me or not?

I think the movies make more sense if you're familiar with the characters through the TV shows so...

TOS:
Doomsday Machine
The City on the Edge of Forever
Balance of Terror
A Taste of Armageddon

TNG:
Cause and Effect
Best of Both Worlds part 1 & 2
Barclay
The Measure of a Man
Yesterday's Enterprise

Then for movies there's Wrath of Khan and First Contact. I know some of these episodes I suggested might seem a bit odd but I generally prefer to recommend at least a few of the more "above average" episodes since they give a little better impression of what the show is mostly like.

If you're going to watch Wrath of Khan I highly recommend you watch TOS episode Space Seed first.

If you like old movies/tv shows then you should really give the whole original tv series a go, there are only 3 seasons. Animated Trek might be worth a look too if you watched old western style cartoons as a kid. For both of those series idk if I can recommend LD though, they have both been remastered on BD, TOS in particular gives you some good options on that format...original sfx or enhanced (remade) and audio options.

Have to second BALANCE OF TERROR .... an all time favorite to be certain.
Also
STAR SEED, this episode with Ricardo Montalban leads up to the Theatrical big screen WRAITH OF KHAN the second big screen release of the franchise.....

Check em out ! And enjoy ! (Hopefully !)

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO POST HERE ANYMORE.....

I feel like with anything start with the beginning, if its not your thing still get through it and go onto next series or movies
and then find out if you really like it.

Star Trek movies are all made for fans of the show. The movies usually have a plot less interesting than a good TV episode that cost 1/5 to make. The Next Gen movies in particular don’t hold up to the show very well at all.

The best movie is clearly Wrath of Khan but Spock’s finale means zilch to anyone who wasn’t already worrying for years that he might end up doing something like that.

I gotta run with signofzeta on that point although I am biased.

The next gen movies seemed forced to me on multiple fronts. My bias is that I never viewed a next gen episode.
Could not and would not be bothered. This pissed off a great deal of my Jean Luc fan friends.

My only true love was the original series and the motion pictures.
The movies mostly due to impressionable years of age when released.
The original series was being aired on network television the night I was born.
Just a fact..... lol

Never viewed deep space or any of the other run off strikes.......

Gotta second deadlegion as well on the animated star trek score.
Animated trek was very underrated being exceptionally well done. Original cast voice overs to be noted.
Short episode duration however excellent plots and the best kicker, they aired with Saturday morning cartoons during a stint in the early to mid 1970's.....
My brothers and I never had to fight over turning the channel when animated star trek was "on" .....

Cheers

yeah I grew up with the movies, remember seeing II -IV in the cinema and on TV many times growing up. I watched the original series in reruns probably in my early teens after I'd seen the movies. To me the movies are highly nostalgic and the characters are more likeable to me when they're older. The movies had a sense of humour to them that the TV series doesn't have either. III is epic, I always preferred it to Wrath of Khan. I like it when Kirk's stupid hippy son gets wasted.

I finally took the plunge two years ago. I started at the beginning and have enjoyed all of it immensely. But I am taking my time instead of binge watching all at once. So I went
TOS
TOS films
Then into TNG where I am currently in Season 6 which I'll then follow with the TNG films before trying out Voyager and DS9.

The best explanation I ever heard was that TNG was a much more fluid series than TOS. The characters in TOS were relatively static, so they were free to explore them as characters in the movies. TNG however had actual character-driven episodes and even entire arcs during the show's run, leaving them with nothing meaningful to do in the movies.

I know it doesn't really matter since there's little cross-series activity, especially between Voyager and DS9, (albeit there's still some) but the first two seasons of the latter take place during the last two of TNG. Generations takes place in the middle of the 3rd season of DS9. Insurrection is clearly implied to take place during the latter seasons of DS9, while Nemesis takes place after everything else.
