I liked what I saw of that show, sort of the first half, although I never went back to finish it so clearly I’m not the one to stick up for it.

Gurren Lagann and Code Geass are like eating junk food. You don't feel too great but especially afterwards. Then you do it again anyway.

It's also a pretty massive ripoff of Getter Robo.

Finished watching "The Book of Bantorra last night. Didn't hate it, but wasn't really my kind of series to say the least.

Have to applaud the early 19th century meets fantasy atmospheric setting of the series. But the story and plot were terribly dark from start to bitter end. Going to watch something a bit more lively next.

I watched that one when it was airing for a bit and dropped it. Found it really slow despite there being some action, did plot ever materialize?

I remember Gurren Lagan being the next big thing when I got out of new anime. I saw a couple of eps and it was cool but not the same as what I really loved about anime. I now see Evangelion as the end of anime.

Lots of good anime post Eva, and lots of trash before it. Mostly just a matter of preference. I like older stuff more myself, but some newer shows here and there are enjoyable.

Another guy I know really only likes 80s/90s sci-fi/horror anime.

well, i'm going through "SORCEROUS STABBER ORPHEN" now, and... it is almost hilariously BAD.

i am going to NEED Nadia and PATLABOR by the time i'm quite through with this crap.
surely even CASSHAN will be better than what i've sat through so far...

If this is some long winded preamble before you tell us you don’t like Patlabor...

Not sure what you expected from Orphen but it's just a light fantasy romp. I thought it was fine for what it is, though I liked the first season more and it doesn't have much "depth".

Quite to the Contrary. i have very high hopes indeed for PATLABOR, that is why i am saving it for last.

all the same, i simply cannot seem to help but feel a little cynical
after being continuously let down by such a long, near-unbroken parade of absolute duds.
at least they were all dirt cheap.

perhaps i'm simply expecting too much out of these series, i guess.
more likely, in the main, i simply just totes suck at picking out Anime for myself. i just don't know...

I loved the Patlabor TV series. The food poisoning episode was my favourite.

i am certain the series is going to be pure joy, after the towering pile of disappointment i've been subjecting myself to.

i'm also hoping that NADIA will be at least "Decent-ish" Knock-on-Wood...

I’m sure what you are saying jives with popular and critical opinion. Everyone knows Patlabor is great and that other stuff is crap. You’re into some really bad doll anime though so we’re basically waiting for whatever it is you’re making us wait for, which we assume will be some relativist plea to let everyone like what they like or whatever after you explain that you don’t like Patlabor.

You should like it. Even though it depicts working adult professionals it’s still a lot like a high school anime in a lot of ways. They sit around a lot and make a huge deal out of beef bowl and minor social interactions as if they’ve never done either before. You love shows like that.

Here, I'm throwing in these recommendations since all of these titles are on sale with Sentai presently. These are all titles I've watched and recommend.

Angelic Layer
Aoharu x Machinegun
Aura Battler Dunbine
BTOOOM!
Chaika - The Coffin Princess
Cobra the Animation (This is technically the second season, the first being available from RightStuf's Nozomi division.)
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
Elfen Lied
Fate/Stay Night
Girls und Panzer
Golgo 13
Green Legend Ran
Gunbuster: The Movie (This is the theatrical edit of the original OVA series which is long OOP and for unknown reasons can't be re-licensed.)
Heaven's Memo Pad
Himouto! Umaru-chan
I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job
Invaders of the Rokujyoma!?
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
Knights of Sidonia
Kokoro Connect
Long Riders! (Only if you're into cycling, otherwise it will probably bore anyone else.)
Maria Holic
Nyankoi!
Outbreak Company
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise
School-Live!
Squid Girl
Stella Women's Academy High School Division Class C3
The Big O
The Hentai Prince & the Stony Cat
The World God Only Knows
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Upotte!!
Utawarerumono (Funimation has the license for Season 1, Sentai has the rest.)
Watamote: No Matter How I Look At It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!
Wizard Barristers

Unless you *really* need a preview of Gunbuster in HD I can’t recommend The Movie. It’s missing everything but the title robot...who doesn’t even appear until the end of episode 2 (of 6) in the OVA and even then, IIRC, just his head.
