A solid fifteen years plus ago I looked into digitizing my then meager DVD collection for the purpose of being able to take just digital files with me on my laptop when traveling, but never could manage to get anything to work exactly right, even the "DVD Ripper" PC software Wal-Mart was selling back then couldn't manage to keep audio in synch. Haven't messed with this since.
But now I've got at least a thousand DVDs, and reading over things here I have to realistically wonder about the potential disc rot, as the DVD format is now approaching 22 or 23 years old, and I have DVDs from all the way back in 1998. And lets be perfectly honest, data storage is super cheap now, and A/V compression technology has become pretty amazing. So once again, would be incredibly to digitize titles I'd like to watch and see them on a tablet or my laptop whenever I felt like watching them, wherever I feel like watching them.
What's out there these days for ripping DVDs and converting DVDs to MP4?

They have something else I can’t remember the name. It’s the same people though. They literally sold life time updates subscription to a ton of people and then they changed the name so they can sell you another lifetime subscription. I switched to dvdfab. It is much easier to use and has a ton more functions.

Source needs to have copy protection removed first though. That can be achieved and, depending on where you live and if it's for personal use, you might have a case where it's acceptable. https://www.toptenreviews.com/when-is-dvd-ripping-illegalJulien

I don't like DVDFab because it is a Chinese product. Yeah I've used DVD Decrypter for years. Great for making iso copies of DVD and removing copy protection for archival purposes. I've got an old WD TV Live media player here that supports a lot of old video codecs (that my newer tv doesn't support) and it can also play DVD iso images.

A couple years ago I set out to rip all my DVDs (about 1000) so I could watch them on my Apple TV. I had a tower with six 48x DVD drives. I then ran 6 instances of Handbrake. It used all of the 128GB of RAM I had installed to do it. I eventually gave up after 2 weeks only having ripped 200 discs. I should have done them in order of importance rather than in alphabetical. It almost seems faster to download the movie in HD from questionable sources. I now just rip the occasional TV show since you get more content for your efforts. I remember I had to add a read me file or something to handbrake to get around the copy protect.

If your media player doesn't support iso (no idea if Apple TV does) then use an old laptop with hdmi output.

Personally I just dump all my media 1:1 to MKV container files. Put them on my NAS and play them in Plex.
May not be to everyone's tastes but it suits my needs. Not any more. Has anyone else suffered from a really poo issue with audio passthrough in Plex? As in, it doesn't? It got right on my t**s when everything being passed through was spat out of my AVR as 'PCM'. Now I am using the latest build of Kodi on a 2015 Nvidia Shield with Plexconnect add-on installed. Kodi seems to spit everything out properly. These days I'm in my favourite slouch pants, plums-deep in the finest cinematic treats while my earlobes are gently soothed and caressed by the dulcet tones of a super juicy Dolby 972,000.1 HyperHD64 TRUE MASTER UUUUHD64 MQADSDTYPE:X soundtrack that 100% accurately emulates the actors vocal chords (down to the EXACT DNA strand codex). Christ knows what's up with Plex. Maybe it's just my setup. Anyway, Kodi and the Ace2 skin are doing it for me these days.
