You’re doing it to protect resell value, I’ll never sell the vast majority of mine, that’s the main difference probably.

You mean shrink wrapped right?

I find Japanese not to be a very complex language, the only thing that's overly complicated is their alphabet, for me it's just random drawing, and I can't even manage to memorize just the hiraganas.

That's interesting because I learnt Hiragana in 2 weeks but 20 years later, 2 years of uni classes, 1 year at a Japanese university, 5 years of working in Japan, having a few Japanese only speaking girlfriends, studying for two hours a day for the last six months and watching countless hours of anime I still can only understand 10% when some oyaji commander slurs something, or some male yankee protaganist says anything more complicated than "Osu", or when a narrator with an accent runs over the plot so far. By the way, this happens a lot in 80s mecha anime and of course Gundam. It's like they're speaking another language to Japanese.

Now something like Orange Road or Maison Ikkoku with mainly females and guys that use "boku" a lot I'm a solid 50%. Still it's not easy.

I've been trying to just build vocab but when an oyaji slurs it with other words and with different to standard suffixes it's useless. I think I might need a different approach, maybe learning common oyaji/male phrases is important. But even then the sounds are so subtle and weird compared to standard Japanese.

Please don't tell me you can understand the narrator in Xabungle because I tried translating 1 minute of speech over an hour and got it almost all completely wrong. This is also due to a lot of idiomatic language used.

So basically you have to have deep understanding of Japanese culture as well to fully understand these shows without subs.

That's why I officially give up and think I'll use your smartphone subs idea.

Thanks.

Then again there was another Aussie on here that claimed he taught himself Japanese with anime and Jpop songs. Some people are just good at learning languages.

No, I have it on my GE999 boxes and I won't sell those while I'm alive.

Not just for resale. My years of comic collecting carried over to LDs to just bag everything.

Hey Saeba, have you seen this forum:

https://forum.kitsunekko.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=677

I registered on it and posted up looking for more subs.

Also maybe an easier way to convert SSA to SRT?:

https://sorz.github.io/asstosrt-wasm/

Thanks for doing the work and uploading Macross and Gundam subs, I'll grab them.

Now i need to find a really long phone or tablet...

I knew the name was familiar...
Yesterday while searching for more subtitles, I found their subs list.
But it's mostly new animes, even though there are some of old ones that might be interesting.

Anyway I was searching specifically for Starship Girl because I'm about to get the first 3 volumes of it (+maybe Perfect Blue special collection box), but I could not find any, nowhere, no matter the language (English/French).
So if you or someone else, happens to have them already, I'd be very thankful if you could send them.

yeah I already grabbed everything I need/might need (all the real robot '80s stuff) from their list.

Similarly I'm looking for Orguss TV subs as it's the next box set I want to watch. Good luck with your search. Let's post back here if we find anything.

I use this website to search for subtitles:
https://anidb.net/

It has a huge database, though finding the files itself is another thing.
As nothing is hosted on that website.
You might need to register an account to use all functions.

Well, thanks a lot for the site, I managed to find the anime I was looking for there and it says there are files for it.
But I don't understand how you can access those (I made an account but it doesn't change).
So could you please explain how does this work ?

Link? If allowed.

Edit:
Had a look at some random subs and it won't let me access the files without being registered, I can't be bothered doing that.

So the avi and mkv files are hardsubbed in video?
Mkv container can have subtitles included (not hardsubbed) but avi needs separate subtitle file usually srt.

OK, I'll try to explain:
It is a file database, for anime especially.
You cannot download anything there, but the information you are looking for is there, as a starting point.
Now for the specific anime "Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko (1999)" there is both good and bad news:
If you look at the files available, you can see some have english, and one even french subtitles.
If you hover with the mouse over the flag, it will give you further detailed info: "type: hard sub".
Unfortunately this means the subtitles are hard-coded into the video for this specific show, so your options are
limited to using a software that will OCR the hard subs and timing into a file, but will need editing and error fixing
later on, or the even worse option, to type them down and time them again from scratch.

Now for any other show you are interested in, check if any files available say "type: soft sub", these can be easily
ripped out of the container. This should be the case for any shows licensed in the U.S. and Europe that have been ripped
after soft subs became a thing.

Other useful information you can find on the site: You will know which group has released a certain anime, that you
are looking for - information on subtitle files is included in the database as well, as some groups tend to release them separately.
Now if you found what you are looking for, the hunt starts: you have to find a place that hosts the files you want.
If you click on the release group name, for many groups you can find certain links: website, irc channel, email.
This can make it easier finding their files.

Disclaimer: It is of course illegal to download any copyrighted works.

Tried kicking off my Great Gundam Rewatch (watching all UC Gundam in release order in the LD era) a couple weeks ago. I don't have the original TV series on LD, only the compilation movies. This time more than previously I found the story disjointed and obviously heavily edited. I think I need to view the original TV series for viewing perfection. Now looking for a TV boxset, if I keep my job..always looking for Zeta and ZZ subs too, the full set of subs for each series seem too rare in any configuration or format..any leads? Thanks if you can help...

No sorry forper, I haven't searched for those series subs since I only have the original tv series and never wanted to watch any of it's sequels anyway so I only have the subs I linked some posts ago in this thread iirc for the original tv series.

Thanks Saeba, I know you did a lot of work to perfect those original TV subs. You should check out some of the later OVA sequels though. 0080 and 0083 are masterpieces.
