Be it stereo, matrix, ac3, or DTS. Just kinda curious since I know starting with dvd the remixing of tracks became much more common. Might be fun to collect the retro movies I already enjoy but on LD with their unaltered theatrical track if possible :)

Difficult to know for sure which titles have an unaltered theatrical mix on laserdisc.
But I'm pretty sure many, and surely much more (in percentage) than DVD, let alone Blu-ray!

While without knowing the original masters, it's impossible to answer that for sure, one title which feels pretty much unaltered for instance is "Air Force One".

The AC3 version (got the Japanese one) to me sounds fantastic with a hilariously high dynamic range.

IIRC 5.1 LDs are all straight copies of the theatrical versions, out of laziness more than anything else. The exceptions would be stuff that had no theatrical 5.1 like Vertigo.

DVD more or less required complete remixing because they wanted to use the same 5.1 to mix all the way down to mono for tiny TV speaker. You can’t even access the 5.1 on an LD without a complete home theater setup so those people were good for it. Meanwhile the stereo mixes mix down to mono just fine.

I have a feeling the NTSC LD of Mannequin has unaltered audio. If only because the audio sounds excellent but also that the video looks like some sort of telecine as it has the reel cuemarks still intact.

I preferred the NTSC LD over the Olive Blu Ray so chose the LD to view when I watched the film recently.

There is little correlation between excellence and original audio.

If you see cue marks every 18 min then that’s a theatrical print. Audio from theatrical prints isn’t typically very good but it is often overdriven and loud which will make the music pump your amp more and ultimately make you happier for a movie like this. “Better” audio (less distortion, more range) would come from a tape. The easiest way to tell if it’s straight from the print’s optical track is if there is some sort of audio hiccup when the reals change, although this can be minimized or disguised. My guess for this movie would be that they used a tape for the sound. It was a major release.

RE: Mannequin, yep definitely a theatrical print. It looks like one giant cue mark with a movie vomited all over it.

It says here it's a Dolby Surround track? My player is being fixed so I will test the disc again when I get it back. Regardless, the audio (to my ears at least) sounded excellent. I think it sounds better than the Blu Ray so I'd be interested to see where Olive sourced their copy of the film from. The Blu Ray also suffers horribly from a weird ghosting effect at the start of the film where yer wan is in the pyramid talking to her ma.

Mannequin (1987) [NJL-37156]

I thought at first it was my TV, but it appears to be some sort of weird effect they laid on to the film itself. It does exactly the same thing on the Laserdisc, except it seems to be more subtle. It's just the cropping that is weird on it.

I've strayed a lot so back to the audio. It's great. The end.
