I've heard it all now. I was listening to the radio today and they were saying how shows like Fawlty Towers shouldn't be shown or celebrated because they are racist. I'm sorry but that is absurd. Its comedy. Who cares if some people are offended. I think shows like this can stand the test of time because of how funny they are. The episode when Basil Fawlty is struggling not to mention the war in front of the Germans is comic gold and always will be.

What is everyone else's thoughts on this? Has the world gone mad or am I wrong?

Either way when I go home I will be watching my Fawlty Towers boxset for a few laughs.

Never heard of the show before, but yes, the world has gone mad since a few years I think, now about almost everything has been categorized as "offensive" in someway or another by some community over the internet on social media, by "journalists" and all other kinds of activists.

Thanks for the reply ryosaeba. If you like British comedy I cant recommend it enough. The Ld boxset is really good. Its available in it's original PAL form on ld as well.

I dont have any kids yet. When I do I want to show them shows like Fawlty Towers. Hopefully to inject a bit of humor and British culture. I dont want to live in a world where Fawlty Towers is considered 'racist'.

The recent riots have made all the thought police crawl out of the woodworks trying to get everything banned because now the corporations are actually listening to them, the fools.

people don't understand anything so they would like to live in a dream world where nothing upsets them but we are different so people seem to be smoking something.
How is Fawlty towers raciest? we are losing all cinema because of idiots. I will buy more copies of Gone With The Wind if that gets band. All I see it as an interesting take on female empowerment in the south post civil war

The thing about most British comedy (not all mind you) is that it isn't just plain old fashioned race hate. It uses those racist stereotypes etc to make fun of the whole thing, the racists in particular are usually portrayed as being stupid and ignorant.

It's the same with movies like Song of the South. Just because it depicts black people as slaves on a plantation, or black people on a plantation during the Reconstruction era, it's all of a sudden racist. As if this period of history did not occur.

This is a very good point. If there is someone being rude or 'racist' it is usually to show that person up. Sacha Baron Cohen playing Borat would be the prime example. Being a Jew, he can go into a bar and sing 'throw the Jew down the well' without being chastised. The joke in this scenario are on the people who are singing along.

I remember the don't mention the war episode from when I was a kid. It didn't make me into a Nazi, that's for sure.

The world has been a very sad place for at least the last decade.

Looney Tunes are also racist.

Guess Song Of The South will never get its public domain now.

But we can still have gang rape murder films just don't say anything bad about Manuell, he's from Spain.

This thread depressed me.

Another word about Song of the South...since people are so ignorant.

It was ALWAYS considered a backward film. Literally from the day it was released. It was never ever “all of the sudden racist”. That is a false statement and people shouldn’t feel good about saying things like that. It premiered in a theater in a city where the very star of the film was not allowed to attend. Why didn’t they premiere it some state that wasn’t s****y? Because it was a story more popular in Georgia than probably anywhere else. If they opened in NYC or LA nobody would have known WTF it was. Controversy has ALWAYS been with this movie. It wasn’t a “liberals took it off the market.” That never happened. Disney is the owner, THEY don’t want to sell it. It’s there’s, they don’t have to. This is not a “ban”.

Secondly, it’s not considered racist because it depicts black people as slaves. It’s considered a dangerous fantasy because it depicts slavery as a happy place for black people. It idealizes the setting, that’s the issue. It makes it seem like everything was just like a new ride a Disneyland when it fact the US slave industry was 400 years of one of the crudest most inhumane murder machines every designed.

Now, knowing how badly you mischaracterized that, I’d just love to hear this episode of a radio show you heard to hear what they really said.

Some other notes:

Faulty Towers is great.

Gone with the Wind frankly sucks. It’s the Avengers of the 1940s. Regardless, nobody is banning it. It’s being removed from HBO Max so they can whip up a mini doc to run with it that explains how racist and massively unrealistic it is.

Another thing I’d like to say is that things like Gone With the Wind do not suddenly offend people one day. Gone With the Wind ALWAYS offended people. It just offended people that had no voice so they just had to take it like all the other BS. Now they don’t, and you’re just learning what the issue is centuries late, clueless and confused. Try not to be such a prat about it.

Gone With the Wind sucks, I agree. I tried to watch it since it came in my LD lot and it's a 4 hour chore.

Fawlty Towers seems genuinely funny. When I looked it up the first thing I noticed is John Cleese was involved, which is a good sign.

Barcelona is a city on the coast of northeastern Spain. It is the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of Catalonia, as well as the second most populous municipality of Spain.

A few episodes of FAWLTY TOWERS already had little bits clipped, the major & Basil talking bits spring to mind.

The episodes broadcast here in the UK have been like that for quite a few years now.

Lots of series have had a similar treatment.

Thankfully we still have FAWLTY TOWERS as they were originally broadcast on LDs, the US box set & the other discs issued.

There are going to be quite a few things here in the UK that are unlikely to be shown on TV again.

Some people just don't get it so there will be many things that will no longer be seen, rather sad all round.

Yeah right, it's not in Spain but In Catalonia, but for the moment, Catalonia is not recognized as a legitimate independent state, so officially it's still in Spain.
