Hello everyone. I recently acquired my first LD player for $10 at a thrift store. I was super excited and plugged it in and pressed the power button when I got home, and nothing happened. No lights, no beep, absolutely nothing. I tried pressing some of the other buttons and nothing happened as well.
I figured "well, it's probably a blown fuse." So I opened it up and checked all the fuses I could find (I found 4) and they all were fine according to my multimeter.
Then I was really confused. I figured "well maybe it's a blown cap?" and nope, everything looked normal. No brown/orange dust, no puffed out tops and not even very much dust.
So I manually opened the disc tray and tried to look at the rest of the board. It looked fine as well.
I'm really at a loss for words here. I'm very frustrated that it doesn't work first of all, but I'm also confused that everything seems completely normal. I hope you guys can help me out.
I can post photos if needed. (Just tell me what part to capture).
Thanks in advance.

It should be the power supply, somewhere. Even if the fuses are ok something is wrong there somewhere...transformer, voltage regulators, caps and all sorts of things can stop working properly in electrical products and have no obvious physical signs of being suspect. Over here thrift stores can't sell electrical goods without testing them for safety and functionality. A dead item like that would be binned well before getting anywhere near the store floor Take it back, get a refund (get them to plug it in if they don't believe you) and ask to keep it anyway (even if you say you'll dispose of it for them).

Oh well it's only $10 so no big loss. Only mentioned it because it's the first thing you should do I test stuff for a Salvos Store btw, not technically thrift as there are hardly any volunteers.

I figure it's something like a dead part somewhere near the beginning of the chain, but that's just me. My technical expertise is very limited so I won't be of any real help I'm afraid. In a case like this I would start with testing the power cord itself and move onto the power supply from there. The thing with psu's is there are some pretty dangerous voltages and caps can retain some of that, I wouldn't be poking around unless you're familiar with such things.

drductape wrote: Yeah I'll be careful around the PSU. It's not dangerous, though. Capacitors don't hold energy after being unplugged for an hour. The player has been unplugged for several hours. I was just thinking you shouldn't be testing psu output with it powered on unless you know what you're doing, and yeah testing just after unplugging. Some caps can hold charge longer than 1 hour but idk if there are any of those there.

drductape wrote: I was wondering that too. It appears to be glue because it's hard. Cap leakage is usually black/dark brown I think. Also gluing caps down is not unheard of, although I don't know why anyone would do it. Maybe I've just forgotten seeing them glued. I can't see anything obvious just as you said. But transformers can fail, caps can look good but be faulty so no sign of power, voltage regs can be shot too. If you have a combination of issues then no sign of life at all isn't a surprise. See with other stuff if I have a workable substitute I'd swap to another psu to test. Last time I did that was with a Nintendo 64 that seemed dead, opened the psu and the fuse was ok and no sign of faulty parts. Instead of spending money not knowing what was actually wrong, I rigged up a PC atx psu as a substitute and the console worked fine. So I went ahead and ordered a replacement N64 psu for the console.

But I could be wrong. Anyway, you might want to check what I circled here first.... I think these are resettable fuses but not sure. A voltmeter should indicate continuity if they are still good (I believe).

Also make sure you test things from one end etc. Make sure the actual power cable is fine. Get a multi meter and test from one end of wire to the next, I've had some electronics that had bad cables. Didn't read all of above but just my free advice
