Been wondering was Nicolas meant by this comment "AHD" but now I know!

Vivaldi: The Four Seasons [AHM-1]

Image

It actually "Audio Only VHD" that you can play like just for the music, no need to turn on the screen.

So... Would AHD be to VHD what DVD Audio became to DVD Video?

Since there is a AHM-10, I guess we are missing #2 till #9 and maybe a few more!

Very interesting but don't understand why it would have been released.
The nice thing about vinyl at the time was the price was super cheap compared to tape or CD.
A record would be in the 4-8 range, CDs were 10-13 at the time, tapes were around 5+ from what I can remember as a kid buying the few cassettes we had.

This AHD would have been so expensive at 6800y.

Might've been Techmoan's last video about VHD? I think he mentioned all the add-on stuff in the video about the unrealized UK launch.

Man. That is pointless. It’s no wonder it’s so unknown.

You're right. I was going by the US prices and forgot that everything in Japan was premium priced for some crazy reason.

Yeah, I was like "so this has what benefits over vinyl again?"

I think Techmoan's video did mention something about AHD containing a slideshow so you could still hook it up to a TV and it'd be like CD+G but better picture, but even then it seems kinda pointless. Probably should re-watch this video:

I'm watching the video right now and apparently AHD uses digital PCM audio and this was not only years before CD+G became a thing but JVC was trying to compete with CD with it so I can see why it even existed. This webpage has some additional technical info: http://disclord.tripod.com/vhddiscworld/id12.html

Looks like it only barely came out, hence the shortage of titles.

It's at 25:32 => https://youtu.be/fKLwAwIfZT4?t=1532

"2.54 GIGA BITES" - JVC was really hungry for that market! or just confused between BYTES and BITS

Alps/Himalaya [AHC-1]
Scandinavian Essay, A [AHM-11]

Hello!

I realized the current display for AHD (using the default VHD template) was quite not right.

I added a AHD logo that shows only if the soundtrack selected is "Digital".

Does it look better now?

Alps/Himalaya [AHC-1]
Yokou Tadanori: Yearning For Millenium [AHC-2]
Tale of the Heike, The [AHC-3]
RIki Ohashi's Message: Deepest Part Of Africa - Encounter with the Pygmy Forest People [AHC-4]
Guide naïf de Paris [AHC-5]

Vivaldi: The Four Seasons [AHM-1]
New York City [AHM-3]
California Girls [AHM-4]
Flatbacker: Flatbacker [AHM-10]
Scandinavian Essay, A [AHM-11]

Should we now be adding the cancelled UK and US VHD titles??? Techmoan's video has a few on there..

The AHD logo looks cool on the lddb pages.. Another obscure format.. Does anyone have any??

I'm not sure it would make much sense since the whole format was scrapped and never released there.

Disclord's page mentions a "PCM Decoder" (similar to the Pioneer DA-1) but the YouTube video gave an example: Victor/JVC AD-7000

Could only find one picture online.

Although the UK and USA VHD format launch was cancelled, some Demo discs do exist. The film Convoy (1978) [NJL-38609] was on a UK VHD demo disc.

Listing them might spur others to look out for Demo titles that were made for the launch but ultimately not released. There may only be a handful of Demo titles anyway.

Perhaps list them as DEMO discs, with a footnote on UK and USA VHD discs saying 'Format launch for UK / USA was cancelled. Discs were never sold commercially'.

This topic is for AHD, were there AHD released outside Japan?
