Long story short, found a VCD box set of an anime I was curious to watch but didn't want to buy the french DVD or Japanese LD
but did find a cheap VCD box on ebay.

Upon looking at the set I wasn't sure about it being complete and the seller didn't know.
The discs were marked DVCD and I did some searching and found that its a Double VCD so you can put twice the information,
doesn't make the PQ any better but thought it was interesting to find out there is a variation to a format that we know of.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_CD#DVCD

Were they pushing the standard RedBook 74/80min. (650MB/700MB) like some burners that could go to "above 80min"?
That would translate to 100min+ of video?

When you check the disc/file size on a computer, what does it report?

Wow that was interesting, my entire computer froze until I removed the disc.

OK so I've tried it on 2 different DVD players and both work but won't show any time, first disc has 4 episodes with only 1 opening and closing credits
so its probably around that 80 minute mark.

I guess I'll have to do a stop watch and time it while watching LOL.

You can get 900mb 99 minute CD-R.
The 99 minute CD-R media was popular for people making slightly higher quality (usually for FMV but sometimes content had to be removed using regular CD-R) Dreamcast backups, although another method is to split games across multiple CD-R (but then you usually need to remember designated "swap" points).
Making backups isn't always about plain piracy, it has also been a method of playing translated games and also other game mods (music etc).

Dreamcast GD-ROM discs are 1GB.

Edit:
I did have at least one CD rewriter capable of reading/writing 99 minute CD but it died ages ago. I'm not aware of such capability in DVD-ROM drives (including writers).
I wouldn't be surprised if it's an old capability that was abandoned much like HD-DVD compatibility with some drives.
I still have a few old PATA/IDE CD writers here but idk if they're 99 minute capable. A lot of CD writers could overburn on regular discs anyway although obviously not that far (usually an extra 40-50MB at most).

Katakana name on covers says:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DT_Eightron
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2186

=> Late 1999 anime boxset for which we have little information: DT Eightron [ZMLZ-101]

There's a few others out there you may stumble on too.

XVCD, KVCD and SVCD.

SVCD was quite popular but didn't seem to break through as well as VCD did. I still have a couple of HK VCD's somewhere. Taxi 2 and Magic Kitchen. I wish I could play Magic Kitchen, even my UB820 won't play VCS's.

Sorry for derailing but does anyone know if Magic Kitchen is on DVD or better?

Yes, DT Eightron, found the box set on YJ but didn't bid when it was 10 bucks, then they relisted and all were selling for 40 bucks.
Couldn't see spending that along with about 60+ on shipping so picked up the VCD for 14 bucks.

Its not really my style of anime that I like but I'm an anime junkie and need to watch new stuff all the time.
Sort of surprised that they didn't release it in the USA on DVD or anything, guess discotek will be doing it soon now that someone will read this post

I tried to update as much as possible on the box set here on lddb but the pics were worse than horrible.

I do remember SVCD, but never heard of this one. It's basically just a longer playing VCD?

I guess that would have also helped SVCDs too because you could only get like 40 minutes of programming on one of those discs.

Yes to my knowledge it has the ability to add more information.

So watched 1 episode last night, with beginning it clocks in at around 22-23 minutes, there is only 1 opening and no closing, they run into episode 2 which
I paused it at and will watch tonight.

So I'm guessing the disc will be around 80 to 84 minutes of information which is pretty impressive for such a format, the PQ is your typical VCD
and you aren't getting any better PQ for this disc.

EDIT: Just finished watching the first disc and the total runtime is 84:37 give or take a few seconds.

Does it re-fetch the intro for every episode like crappy old American anime DVDs always did?

Thankfully no, I don't know if I actually own any older anime series on DVD to have seen that, it would be really annoying to have that skip back to see the
title credits again.

I have scanned through the first disc and it only has 1 opening then 4 episodes then I believe the end credits, I'll update when I finish, watched about 1 1/2
episodes last night.

This was done with early anime DVDs. Back when they are single layer single sided. They had space issues but they had quicker seek times. So the intro and outro would be on there once each and the disc had a “Play All” that included going back to the same opening/ending for every EP. At the time, as an LD fan, I noticed it. The seek times aren’t that good! Obviously this wouldn’t work for shows where the intros change.

Its really cool to make your own mpeg-1 VCDs at 2mbps of vídeo bitrate, Pioneer DVD players read them as full compliant vcd discs with playback control; hdmi upscaling do his part and pixelation is no more a distracting problem
