I was of a mind to attempt to make my player dead silent by attaching some noise-dampening mats on the inside of the top cover. It’s not super noisy, but I like my electronics fanless and silent. Is this a good idea, or will adding some rubber mats throw some sensitive mechanical adjustment out of whack?

Another thing that struck me was that the composite picture is really soft vs the S-video on this player. Has anyone attempted a clean composite output ala the raw rf stuff people have been talking about for the Sony HIL-C2EX or the corresponding Panasonic? Or, is this impossible on this player, or is there no gain to be had?

Lastly - not having a service manual, does the PSU board cross with some other player? It would be nice to insert a 230V tolerant PSU just to get rid of the step down transformer.

Should have no issues with mechanical adjustments, but I would be more concerned about heat.

People buy the CLD-R7G for the S-Video, not the composite. It has one of the best combfilters ever put inside a LD player. Composite signal can be cleaned up by bypassing recombination/digital memory/etc but this is not the player for that.

You can see if the CLD-D515 or CLD-D925 power supply might work.

Thanks! I didn’t think the player would be that hot, but it sounds like I’d better check both IR-temp and stick a K-type sensor in there to see how it’s coping before and after.

The S-video picture is fine, I was just angling of it’s possible that the eval board would do a better job from the composite, or of the difference is small. It’s on its way, so it will be a while before I know. Something like composite, S-Video, Composite to eval, S-video to eval. Tinkering is fun

Yes the R7G really delivers a great image via s-video but as you noted is terribly soft outputting via composite, the only reason I got rid of mine was when it was made redundant by purchasing a Lumagen Radiance 2144 VP.

I have purchased some of my players from an LD player specialist based in the UK and I know in recent years he’s sold European mains voltage modded 7Gs for use here and actually offered this treatment for my player which I only decided against as I’d then replaced it with an X9. Welcome onboard the forum btw

Yes I would be very interested in hearing about these comparisons. Particularly Composite -> Eval -> Display vs S-Video -> Display

I run my R7G from svideo to dvdo edge to hdmi out.

As Gerald Lambeau says, it's like a difficult equation. It's quite erotic.

I thought about doing the psu conversion but it's just hassle. I have a powerful enough stepdown to kill a small horse. It powers the R7G and APD2 with about 9000 jigawatts to spare.

If it ain't broke...

Enjoy the R7G. It opened my eyes to how great Laserdisc can be. Look after it and enjoy watching your discs.

Sell it and buy a POS player to tinker with.

Don't break a great player because you want to tinker.

Ahh, I baby my CLD-R7G. It’s a source of pride, so I’m not going to solder willy-nilly or mess with the mechanics. Low-level tinkering will be done on a beater player if needed. That said, I’ve repaired and modded some really expensive amps and synthesizers, so I know enough to tread carefully at least.

The good thing with the R7 is that it’s feature complete for LD - it has AC3 out, CLV picture memory, LD-G decoding, autoreverse and all that jazz so there’s no need, perceived or otherwise, to mess deeply with the player.

Yep. Leave it be and just enjoy your discs.

No you don't, not with LD players, these are a different creature and you will botch it.

I've fixed synths to an extent, amps, guitars, speakers etc but know that LD players need a special hand.
Not that it can't be done but you will botch the first few players I'm pretty sure of that.

the Power supply from a cld-d925 should fit this player. schould be easy enough just swapping it out!

take some pics of the power supply to be sure! I have fitted cld-d2950 PS into my cld-hf9g and cld-99 elite player. All recapped btw!
