Wow, you are in uncharted territory.
People talk about rebuilding the spindle motor but haven't yet.
Keep up the work, I doubt it will work after all the work you do but if you succeed then others can learn from it,

Usually the issue with spindles is the bearing. I guess we have to be on the lookout for this too.

I suspect a bearing issue would result in abnormal noises, abnormal shaft movement (wobble), or a hub that refuses to spin freely. Other issues would seem to be related to other parts inside the motor failing or the power supply. I'm an amateur at all this. I'm really curious what the three capacitors inside the motor and that I'm replacing, actually do. There must be a good reason they're located "inside" the motor? Such as inconvenient place for them to be if and when they fail.

my "first" LD player was a CLD-1080 that wouldn't spin a disc.

after about 10-odd secs. of power-up, the lens barrel in the pickup would begin audibly and visibly vibrating,
and a definite, fishy foul odor began to emanate from somewhere in the chassis.

this was WAY back, -must have been around 2000/2001- so i didn't know the first thing about what might have been going on,
let alone how to possibly even begin to approach the problem...

My guess is that as the motor is spinning, the stench from the old leaking caps inside the motor gets stirred up and blown out the openings in the motor housing. The spinning of the laserdisc contributes to blow the smell out of the machine.

that 1080 is LONG GONE... that said, it wouldn't even begin to attempt to spin a disc, not even once.

even so, that odor rapidly came along with a vengeance, every single time i fired it up to clumsily attempt to tinker...

Just an update. I got the 3 new caps installed on the motor's rotor and I put the motor back together. I put about 9v on it and it spins with no issues. I've got to get some epoxy to put at the base of the disc spindle so it won't slide down the motor's shaft and then I'll reassemble and see what happens. Lol.
