The lens still doesn't look correct on the inner side. It should be a clear focusing lens. Would you put that on a camera?

I tried taking a lot of different pictures in different light settings - but they all come out pretty much the same - Using a Jewellers Loupe maybe there is a coating defect on the inner surface of the lens..Im not 100% sure

Still unsure sure why the unit cannot identify a CD but can an LD... unit looks in almost new condition other than it does not work!

As many have mentioned in the past, this could be a CD centering issue. And if bad enough, could explain why it won’t play the LD at all.

Anyway to check centering or remedy?

Also Ive observed that on Side A of LD it tries harder spins longer than when you try SIDE B of LD - (using the Jet Turn feature where the Optical Block moves up over SIDE B)...Side B the Optical Block takes tries three times to see something then gives up...yet yesterday on SIDE A it was spinning for about a minute..one time only!

Given this multiple looks with different Loupes and I am convinced that there is a defect to the coating to the inner surface of the lens.

I have found a replacement laser unit cheap!..will take a while to come..so a while to confirm this is a fix..until then will put it back together plug a bluetooth receiver into it and my teenagers can use it as a retro amp.

:D :D

Thanks to all who helped ! now working as it should. New Optical Assembly fitted.

The replacement part was not identical - wires/plugs differing length..guides missing.
Casting was exactly the same so managed with some micro surgery to make it fit.

Issue all along - Optics Lens slightly cloudy...a lot of humidity here...but also its a Karaoke Unit therefore may have had a smoke filled retro life back in the 90s.

AWESOME! I’m so glad this unit landed in the hands of the person who would fix it.

And yeah, the smoke was probably horrendous. :)

I’m impressed you got it fixed with a simple swap. Gives me some assurance that it may not be as hard when I have to attempt it myself.

Cheers :) - Yes If you can get the exact same replacement part - then I would say swapping is definitely doable!

The actual part I ended up with needed a press fit metal guide...I improvised and used a drill bit end :) ..swapping of a couple of mini PCB's from the old assembly - because of orientation differences..and one set of wires needed extending....definitely more involved but it worked!

Today I threw some 10 different LD's at the player - All Good!

However....CD's still do not play - though the player reads the TOC
Also switching between 'Analogue and Digital' Audio whilst playing an LD works fine.

So thinking this is a Spindle Centering issue - as mentioned by members earlier in this thread.

So question now is - anyone know of a guide or advice to try to correct an off-center spindle?...no service manual for this Sanyo unit I can find...are all spindles mechanically adjustable ?

Cheers

Definitely need to try to find SM or something close to it. Spindle centering refers to the pickup's location relative to the spindle, so it is the location of the pickup that is moved on everything I've worked on.

Thx cplusplus !

As I understand it then - we are talking about a mechanical lateral adjustment of the pickup assembly in relation to the centreline of the spindle.

Cant see any obvious adjustment on this Sanyo assembly- do all brands of pick up assemblies have this adjustment?

I have found an SM ! will take some time to arrive -

I am still learning..one step at a time :)

Correct.

As for the brands of pickups, it is what the pickup is attached to that moves. i.e. the rail/shaft or base.

Since it sounds like it is almost playing a CD, you can find out where this adjustment is and then make tiny turns left/right until playback starts. This adjustment point is likely in a location where you can adjust it while a CD is clamped on the spindle.

Centering is just speculation though. When you swap out pickups like this, there are several adjustments to be checked and made.

It was that and (at least on the Pioneer units) it would switch to the analog track so that you can use the multiplex control (Balance knob on your unit) to isolate between the left and right channels as there would be a mono music track on the left and a mono music+vocals track on the right (if disc was encoded that way). This was either used to help singers practice or use it like a duet mode. The digital tracks on a Karaoke disc would be a stereo version of the music only track.

So how did you fix the CD playback issue? Pot adjustment?

Thanks ldfan ! learnt more from your post.

Thats the thing - I believe I must have pressed' Karaoke Mode' somehow! and without the TV on couldnt see that the track was in 'PAUSE'. There is no indicator on the unit!

I have just tried a bunch of CD's and all good!..no adjustment to POT's or Mechanics Needed

The unit sound output is very good.

This unit is kinda like a 90s Music and Video Jukebox ..and now with Bluetooth.
Its a keeper!
