I was recently gifted a CLD-S104 and have decided to try out some mods on this player. I'm currently working on an AC-3 board (thanks ldfan) and will have that ready soon. For the current project, I want to see about adding digital out to this single sided player.

I've researched these two threads and can't come to a conclusion on my tap points.

https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=8382
https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1142

On the service manual for the CLD-S270 (closest I could find), I wasn't sure what tap to use. It looks like DFOUT is Pin 35. I've seen other pins mentioned in the other threads.

I think I can locate +5V and Ground. I did buy one of those digital kits from eBay, so the board is ready to go.

Help!

It appears that you will need to tap pin 43 of IC-802 for the digital out. Pin 27 is the on/off pin that should register 5vdc when the player is on (if it registers 0vdc you will need to provide power to it).

Not sure if there will be a trace to tap from on this player like my M90....

If not, you'll have to be careful how you solder a wire to the leg.

Thanks ldfan. I plan to take the player apart this week and find the traces. I'm curious how you were able to figure out Pin 27 is +5v. The schematic doesn't seem to indicate anything being assigned to that pin?

Well, if you go to the ebay link for the digital output board you purchased, it does list the chips the board is compatible with in the description section and it states the pins for the digital out and the on/off pin in parenthesis....

https://www.ebay.com/itm/323774426627?_ ... %7Ciid%3A1

However, I just checked the datasheet for this chip here.....

https://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet ... 1KE-L.html

....and what it states for pin 27 doesn't seem to match with what I was thinking. Thus, I wouldn't worry about pin 27 at this time as there is a good chance that all DSP chips in Pioneer LD players have kept the digital output set to "on". Just go with finding a trace that leads to pin 43 of IC-802 and go from there.

Good luck with the mod and see about posting your work when you get it done ;). Would love to see an S104 modded.

Ok, I have updates. I found +5V and ground for my molex connector on the top part of the board. Those should be easy enough. For the coax cable, I found a tap point on pin 43, good to go there. Do I need to connect the coax ground?

Pictures included

It probably would work but it still would be preferred to GND it as a means to prevent possible noise from getting into the signal.

You can do what I did with my M90 by adding a long enough extension to reach a nearby GND.

Thanks everyone for your help. I got the mod installed with no issues! Pictures enclosed.

I had to scale down the resolution on these photos, but I was able to find a trace for Pin 43 from IC802. I tinned the coax wire and that was enough to secure it. The black wire coming off the coax wire is a ground pigtail to extend it so I could attach it to the top of the board.

On the top side of the board, I connected my +5V and two ground connections.

I used a hole punch to make the biggest part of my holes, then used a couple small files to finish the holes. It takes some patience, but you can punch partial holes to widen your initial hole.

Holes finished. They're not 100% perfect, but pretty close and everything fits!

I cleaned up the wiring and zip tied it together. There is ample room in this player to the side of the tray (when it's closed).

I'll finish my post up with a few more photos.

Here is the finished product. Right now, it's only secured to the chassis with the coax cable screw. I'm going to fashion up something that uses 1 of the 4 board holes to further fasten this to the chassis. When I plugged in my optical cable to test, the board moved a little.

Stuck an LD in (Forrest Gump) that I knew had Digital Audio and hooked it up to my soundbar with the optical port. Hit play and I heard audio! I used a remote from another CLD machine, but pressing the audio toggle button didn't seem to do anything. Also, the front display does not have a digital audio light to illuminate. I listed for about 10 minutes and had no drops.

Thanks again to ldfan. I'll probably post this over on Laserdisc Forever as well.

Congrats on getting the job done .

Looks great on the wiring job and good for you getting that square hole shaved out (that was always the challenge for me).

That's correct. The audio button to choose between digital and analog is only for the analog left and right outputs. The digital output you just added is strictly for accessing the digital audio track whether it is PCM or DTS.

That is correct for the 104. The FL display is very limited in size and they left the digital audio indicator off of it. However, it will display on your TV screen.
