Hi everyone !
I just found a cld959 in great condition ! I couldn t resist to buy it, for anly 150$ !
Here are the issues I have from now.

1. Not so important, but chapiter tracking seems to be bad. It works sometimes, but the player can track them usually.

2. I can see some very light vertical waves on the screen during the movie. The waves seems to disapear after 1 hour of watching. It should be old capacitor. But there are so much capacitors on the player, then I don’t know where I can start…

3. CAV discs are sometimes not readable at the end of the disc. It should be a lens adijustement problem.

I suppose that I should start by opening the player , clean the lens with an appropriate lens cleaner. But after that, if someone could help me to restore the player ?

Good to see you're back.

I don't know as much as others but it sounds like it may need tracking adjustment??

Try a CD and this will help to tell you something.

Hi rein-o !
Yeah... lot of things happened during these last 2 years.
I have now an 1 year half boy, and I bought an house in Japan. I had to ask for a loan, etc...
No time for my LD life.
But I try to come back little by little. Then I decide to buy this player to play with^^

When you suggest to ajust tracking, it's about the chapiter problem ?
I will try a CD next day off !

Congratulations.

I can't remember all but if it plays the CD then you can figure out something from that, it will have to do with tracking if it doesn't play.
But I am just going my memory, but this is I know a quick test to make sure possibly centering??
Again I can't remember I just know that if the CD has an issue with playback then its is a possibly easy adjustment?

As you post it could also be dirty laser, bad capacitor. But I know the CD will give you some answers.

I should maybe change the 2 bigs capacitor + the greens with gold around ?

I have some knowledge about soldering but not any about electronics...
I imagine that the big ones can be dangerous to manipulate (I unplugged the player 2 weeks ago, but...)
Should I take some precaution ? What sort ?

ugh, I guess that's not glue under those caps... they probably smell like fish, but if the player is partially working then at least the board traces should be OK.

Yeah, I will change that. But I am a little bit afraid of manipulate such big capacitor.
How long time should I wait after unplug the player until touch it ? 2 weeks, 1 month ?

I don't think a shock from a capacitor will kill you, but you can probably discharge them easily. Try looking for guides on YouTube or somewhere.

For those two caps, I don't consider them all that big (unlike the one's in a lot of older amps) and if there is a shock value I don't think you'd feel it all that much (you can only get shocked if you touch the terminals anyway).

Just replace them as it appears they are leaking and probably a big reason for the issue. If you want, you can also order copper tape if you want to wrap the new caps to keep it looking original to what Pioneer intended (I think they did it for noise isolation).

Hi everyone !
I finally could change all the bad caps ! It took times to find them all...
I also did a cleaning of the lens (with non alcool base lens cleaner)
Now the image and sound are clearly better, but I have 2 problems not yet resolved :
A very few crosstalk effect.
A problem for chapiter tracking.
Could you help me to confirm that :
For crosstalk problem, I should play with TILT balance screw ?
For chapiter tracking, I should ply with TRKG balance screw ?
I wait for your replies !

I dunno if it's a good idea to mess with those screws unless you have an oscilloscope and service remote (or Harmony or other remote programmed with its codes). If you do, you should follow the service manual, but I don't see the service manual for the CLD-959 in https://manuals.lddb.com/LD_Players/Pioneer/CLD/ . Take a look around and see if you can find one that's close to the specs/internals of the 959, it should be good enough.

A test disc might come in handy but I haven't really needed one whenever I needed to adjust the centering/tangential screws on my player, I just adjusted them until the signal was at its highest point on the oscilloscope. But you might need a CRT TV or monitor, the service mode signal can get pretty screwy and a video processor might not lock onto it.

I believe this is the equivalent of the CLD-97 but I can't remember now.

I hope someone can help to guide you on which adjustments should be made, if any are needed.

The 959 is a 97, you can just use the 97 manual to adjust it.

Thanks ! But I have no oscilloscope and no test disc.
I can try to adjust these 2 screw because it's easy to access, just by opening the top of the player.
I can do a mark on the board at the actual position and try to turn it until I get a result. If there is no good result I come back to the original position.

OK ! Tracking problem resolved thanks to the trkg balance screw !
Now, I have to resole my last problem : the vertical waves.
I think it should be an other bad capacitor somewhere... I will search again.

OK, I got back to the player. Opened it again, searching for a bad cap or other causing the video distortion.
I found that the player was modded for AC3 output.
The mod was installed at the place of the second video output. For that, the modder cutted the video signal on the board and connected the wires for the audio mod.
I realised that the solder was very bad, and may caused the video distortion, as the solder may touch both audio and video signals on the board.
Here is the picture of the solder :

I don't know exactly what to do now, but I think I will insold the mod from the video out at first.

The wire is connected to this little box. Don't really know if this is the AC3 board or if this part is in any CLD-959?

I always hated seeing people mod their players in that way. In a way, it's easier to take over a jack you don't feel one needs, but it's really a hack that at best really ruins the original functionality of the player. And I know some people think punching out a new hole may also look like ruining the original look of the player, but if it's done neatly I feel it adds to the look of the player and will still retain all of the player's original output jacks as is.

It might not be causing any issues. If the trace was completely cut off, there would be no way for the AC3 signal to make it back to the video chip. However, it wouldn't hurt to remove the mod and clean up all the possible solder bridges and then re-test the player. If the issues is still happening, then there is more to search for and possibly the issue is still dried caps.

That box is definitely not a part of the CLD-97 based on schematics of the player (I would look inside my 97 but I'm too lazy to open it up @ the moment). It sounds like the person who modded the player thought it would be a good idea to put the AC3-RF board inside a shielded container. Honestly speaking, considering it's located all the way @ the front the player, I would think the excess wire run alone would defeat the effectiveness of such a box. I would open up the box to peak inside and see if it's really an AC3 board and then remove it along w/ the wires. You can re-install the board @ a better location (and without the box) once you get the issues resolved.
