I used to have the PAL UK uncut laserdisc of Arnie's 1985 Commando.
It was a lovely edition with great audio and video quality.
The two channel stereo track was so bombastic when I played the movie.
Machine guns blasting through my hifi speakers was intoxicating and addictive!
Unfortunately I sold this UK laserdisc.

I had the same movie on R1 dvd from FOX, this was the two movie edition with rated and unrated version of Commando.
Finally seing this awesome movie in it's full was breathtaking.
Unfortunately dvd's from FOX seem to develop laser rot!?!?
I also had Death Sentence on unrated dvd developing laser rot!
So check all your FOX dvd's for laser rot!
So I got rid of both dvd's now I don't have any Commando in my collection!

I was thinking of getting the Japanese laserdisc.
It's been released twice in Japan.

Early laserdisc from 1986 Commando (1985) [SF078-1191] has the only two channel stereo track.
Later laserdisc from 1991 Commando (1985) [PILF-1242] has a surround sound stereo track

I only have a two channel hifi system playing my movies.
Which one of the two Commando discs is more suitable for the two channel stereo?
If later version from 1991 only offers surround sound on disc do I get two channel audio no spatializer fake surround cr@p?

Which one do you recommend over the other?
Earlier pressing or later laserdisc?


There is also no info about who manufactured the 1986 disc?
Any rot problems?

In %99 of all cases if a movie is Dolby Stereo in one region then all LDs based on that same master will be too. Dolby Stereo is used on almost every big time Hollywood movie from the 80s on up. The Surround aspect is totally invisible, you won’t know you have it at all on a two channel system.

For the 2 channel stereo sound it doesn't matter which one I buy of the both LD's?
On ebay there are plenty copies of the first release and only one copy of the 2nd release.

I would say neither. Why would you want a pan & scan edition of the film?

Unfortunately Japan disc only offered the PoS edition not meaning the piece of sh*t format but pan & scan.
US laserdisc had both PS and WS format which is more prefferable.

However the Commando WS disc seem to be a rotter???

Our database doesn't indicate any history of rotting for the WS edition....

I don't want BD's as I don't collect movies anymore.
If there are special releasees I would only buy specific titles like Miami Connection or Naked Vengeance.

It's the classic unpretentious stupid action film. It's ridiculous, over the top and commits to itself 100%.

Ok, one confession.
There are a few cool as heck scenes in Commando that did move my opinion a tad.
When Arnold hefts and deploys that four tubed M202A1 Flame Weapon i lost it !
The report was totally Hollywood and wrong for the weapon type, however carrying and firing such a antique was swag imo !
I really wanted to like commando, being young and an impressionable at the time of the middle '80s.
It was the script that sank it for me.
Thankfully THE TERMINATOR gave Arnold a pass for any rotten tomato gaffs !.

When my friend and I originally rented Commando I didn’t even notice how unique it was. The Freddie Mercury bad guy, “let off some steam”, the very premise of the thing. There were a lot of craption movies for rent or on cable back then…When I revisited the movie in the 90s is when I discovered how coke fueled and homoerotic it is.
