I connected my soundbar to my laserdisc player and it doesn't seem to recognize the dts sound at all. It has a buzzing sound and I think I heard a man's voice saying something about compatibility issues. Do I need to have 5.1 speakers and not 2.1? Are soundbars too new for laserdisc players? Now this DTS laserdisc is pointless. :(

Regardless of what the issue is here, if all you have is a sound bar then DTS is pointless. Every DTS LD is 5.1.

Does your soundbar include a DTS decoder?

Depends on the type of soundbar but I would assume any version that is a 2.0 or 2.1 unit would not recognize DTS since the codec was always designed to always be a 5.1 or greater delivery system.

Soundbars, however, will always recognize Dolby Digital (not the LD version) since the codec was designed around any mix of channels from 1.0 to 5.1 (or more). Also, PCM will always play on any sound bar.

So at this point, get a real home theater system if you want to hear surround sound. They aren’t all that expensive and you might even be able to get something for nothing on the used market.
