So, as I'm on the hunt for certain "pan and scan" releases - films shot in the Super 35 format really - I've come across this Japanese pressing of Ridley Scott's Black Rain available on Ebay for a reasonable price. However, I've never bought a Japanese laser disc and had some questions about the subtitles. Now, as Black Rain is a film based in Japan and has certain sequences in Japanese with English subs, does this mean that on the Japanese laser disc these scenes still have English subs?? I get that the rest of the film will have hard encoded Japanese subs in the picture for the English dialogue scenes, but I'm just curious about the the Japanese languagae scenes.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Japanese release will not have any English subtitles when Japanese dialog is playing.

Nobody is posting if this is actually a super35 on the listings so are you sure of this fact that the pan and scan is actually open matte super35.

You are going to have to wait for the one or two who may know, or just get the USA disc that will be more what you are looking for but unknown if this is the super35.

I would say that PROBABLY there won’t be subs for the Japanese. That’s a late period release of a late period movie so if they did things the way they are supposed to in the 90s they would have left the Japanese unsubbed. It’s possible there are English or Japanese subs over the top. Usually you only see that with older movies where they couldn’t produce an actual local print.

This movie sucks, btw.
