As I believe I've mentioned, I use my LD library to run an event at Project A-Kon called the "Classic Anime Festival". Once again, I am put to some inconvenience, because the International Space Development Conference is the previous weekend. But never mind that.

I have twelve hours in three four-hour blocks. This year's theme, which I try to coordinate with, is "Gateway to New Beginnings" (basically because the convention has changed hotels after several years). So I'm figuring to do mostly first episodes of things. (Possibly the first 2 episodes of Escaflowne, because the first one is such a fake-out!) To kick off, Tenchi Muyo (OVA) episode 1, not least because it opens with a shot of a torii gateway.

As always, suggestions are entertained!

As long as you're not cutting out the 1st episode of Escaflowne like FoxKids did! :lolno:

Hmmmm . . . how about Macross Plus? Some friends of mine are fawning over Macross Frontier from a couple years back, but it couldn't possibly be as good as Macross Plus.

Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop are good ones too, despite them being on Adult Swim at one point.

That reminds me, Yoko Kanno was just announced for Otakon this year (and here I wasn't even planning on going this year!) I have to decide on what LDs I want autographed by her. Had her autograph some Escaflowne and Please Save My Earth soundtrack CDs when she appeared at Otakon 99, so now I might have her sign one of the Escaflowne LDs or maybe Macross Plus.

I was planning to go to Otakon but since I have a job now which makes it hard to take off since its at Amazon. :( I love Yoko too

as for Project A-kon why not start it off with project A-ko? Also why not do some Eva on LD?

Publius, what an exciting upcoming event !
How long have you been running this KON ?

Are walkins welcome or do you have to be a member to attend?
If spontaneous attendance is allowed, can admission be obtained for individual 12 hour blocks or is it a packaged all inclusive admission?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Just curious as I have family in East Texas and if I could arrange a visit over late May / early June.........?????

Con membership is available on a daily or weekend basis (see here), but for legal reasons, as I recall, the viewing rooms are open to anyone who cares to come in. Now, the programming & so on is good enough that I suggest taking the full plunge, but I can't coerce you!

A-Kon has been running for 24 years now, being the oldest Japanese-animation fandom convention in North America. I've only been doing this event for about 5 years, because I felt somebody should, & I was the one to do it.

I've gotten into the habit of running Project A-Ko as the last scheduled item. My last time slot is noon to 4 PM Sunday, & in practice the video rooms shut down sometime after 4, so I keep spinning discs until the AV guys show up to tear the room down!

Good call on Escaflowne; one of my favorites!

For the "Gateway to New Beginnings" theme, I was thinking:
First episode of the Robotech Masters saga (New beginning to story, but purists may revolt if shown)
Bubblegum Crash (the return of the Knight Sabers)
Here is Greenwood (character getting fresh start in high school)
Kimagure Orange Road Movie: I want to return to that day (New beginning for Kyosuke and Madoka, but huge spoiler for anyone who wasn't seen the series)
Lupin III: Fuma Conspiracy (Goemon get's married)
Rumik World: Fire Tripper (Characters get a new beginning in the end)
Wind Named Amnesia (New beginning for the whole world)

Good suggestions.

I thought I might just show the first episode or two of KOR. The movie, which I admit to having shown in the past, is rather like being kicked in the head! (Catharsis is probably the word.)

The first episode of El-Hazard is definitely on the list. I'd almost show the last one instead, except that nobody who wasn't already familiar with it would have any idea what was going on!

I ran into Alex Orrock from LA (who did this event one year when I couldn't be present), & he said he is re-watching all of Macross at the moment. Apparently he is into Seven right now, which is pretty heavy going! I said I couldn't help thinking of Sharon Apple any time Hatsune Miko is mentioned…

I love 7 but it didn't really get good until the Dynamite 7 OVA series...which is ridiculous, if you think about it. The TV series is just way too long, and this is coming from a fan. I really love Dynamite though.

I'm glad you like it.
Honestly, the differences between the two versions of the episodes are not very large, only a few seconds as far as I could tell, but the fansub scripts I had were for those versions!
It appears, from looking at the discs, that episodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, & 7 have "long versions". I don't know whether anyone has bothered to put together anything showing the differences.

Oooh, great choice!
Episodes fit with the theme, work as a stand-alone story, and are just plain great!

I might have to collect Escaflowne now on LD. I wish the movie was released on LD but it wasn't I love the music to it.

One of the first import DVDs I ever bought was the Limited Ed Escaflowne movie DVD. I mainly went for it because it was mixed in DTS surround, and I was on a DTS binge back then.

how is that compared to the US 3 disc one with soundtrack because I have that one plus the BD which I wish they carried over everything from that edition but they didn't.

There's an entire LD set on YJA right now (that's how I got mine):

I don't have the US 3 disc, I only have the Perfect Collection which features the entire TV series along with the movie. I can only assume the movie DVD included with this box would be the same DVD as the US standard release.

As for the Japanese DTS limited edition goes, it's 2 disc: movie on one disc, 38 minutes of supplements on the other. Comes with a 35 page booklet, color and two-tone, with character designs, making of notes and whatnot.

Did a quick and dirty comparison of the two releases. The transfer is slightly different. The Japanese image is slightly darker than the US release (different NTSC black levels between Japan and North America rearing its head again?) And the DTS sound mix is different too. Some effects are more powerful on the Japanese disc, while subdued on the US.

Of course, the US release has English subtitles and an English soundtrack--as well as an isolated score track--while the Japanese disc has none of that.
